D.C. is very similar to Toronto. Both are very staid and standoffish; conservative and plain in fashion and aesthetics.

DC conservative? No, never has been, atleast in the past 80 years. Government is the main economy there, they only win with government expenditure. Now, we could argue it is more conservative when Republicans are in office, but in truth, it doesn't make any difference. DC is and has always been liberal. EDIT: your last sentence is somewhat abstract, but I guess you were referring to fashion and aesthetics, not politics. If so, my bad.

Are things better or worse in your opinion? What is better and what things are worse?
Everything about LOS ANGELES sucks now compared to then. I arrived in March 1991, a young 27 year old ready for adventure. Back then, rent was higher than DALLAS (where I came from). My DALLAS apartment was $325/mo with my Long Bch rent $435/mo. Even my Hollywood apartment was $600/mo. Then, I moved to a small rent stabilized apartment that went from $475 to $522 when I left in 2000 (big mistake). Driving the 210 to me was “scary” because it seemed so mountainous from about Monrovia to Pasadena! But, the traffic ran very smoothly. My morning drive from weho (affordable weho) to Warner Center was about 25-30 min and then 25-30 min the other way to Monterey Park.
Bottom line- NOT CROWDED and NOT EXPENSIVE.
Even back then, natives cursed the out of state “invaders”. Now, you’ve got a different set of invaders- the illegals and the rich legal foreigners.

I know precisely what you mean -- Audi is becoming my least favorite of car brands right now.

Much less of a visible gang presence. Some areas where you would see gangsters 24/7 look like ghost towns now...... Less graffiti. No open air drug markets, No street prostitution like their used to be. All postives.

No more sassony arcade on Broadway though.

It's been a great change. The poor riff raff is moving out and wealthy people are moving in. I love gentrification.

Mostly true, except for music and film.
The music industry in LA is pretty much garbage now, churning out bland, mediocre blah music.
This wasn't the case from the 60's up to the 90's. The same is true with the film industry as well. The originality and creativity has gone downhill.

I guess I'll take "soulless" over getting car jacked by some gang banger.
