You will NOT go anywhwere at 5pm. You will be STUCKED in traffic for HOURS if you choose to drive. If you drive, you should leave before 3pm.

Take the metro rail if you can. Go to Burbank airport if you can. Will save you YEARS of your life.

I also recommend using Burbank if at all possible, but if you're still considering flying out of LAX, Culver City and the surrounding areas would be reasonable for commutes to both the airport and downtown. Beverly Hills is sort of central, too, but I don't know what your budget is...

Traffic will be murder no matter what, though. Both the 405 and the 10 are horrible. (I-405 is the busiest freeway in the country). There's no place you could choose where you'd have < 30 minute commutes to both downtown and LAX, if you're driving between about 6-11am or 3-7pm.

just live in Burbank. You'll love it and it sounds like the easiest option for you. Your commute downtown wont be bad and being so close to the airport will make up for it. The Commuter Express is a great way to get Down Town.
