You hit it on the nail for me. LA has a certain dreaminess to it...a mood, vibe, and energy that's created by its physical location, natural beauty, climate, people, architecture, history, Hollywood, among other things that makes it very unique and special and unlike any other major city, especially in the U.S.

Spend about 9 winters in Colorado Springs. I have not seen a leaf in 5 months.

But is seeing leaves 12 months of the year worth doubling your cost of living and dealing with all the crap in LA?

Well, apparently it is for millions and millions of people. Honestly, I do not know how so many people can afford it. The wages are higher though. And it's not the leaves all year...it's what that means. Dead frigid gray landscapes that dominate the calendar...sand all over the roads and white knuckle driving on a dark icy highway with the kids in the car...that is reality here.

Palm trees are beautiful reminders that the weather is comfortable.

The wages are a little higher, but not much.

People "afford" it by spending way too much of their income on way too little housing. You go from spending $1200/mo to rent a house to spending $1800/mo to rent an apartment that's not even that nice. Its also not uncommon for people to spend up to 50% on their gross income on housing. If your income goes up 20% by moving and your cost of living goes up 60%, something's got to give. Many people are here because they were born here and don't know any different. Others are all hoping to be a star and are willing to live like peasants for their shot at fame and fortune. Many come from the east or Midwest and are willing to give up a lot for a 70 day in January. But don't kid yourself, the sunshine tax is huge.

But every time I go there I survey what people think. I ask the fifty year old checkout lady at Albertson's, the 23 year old guy at the hotel...Everybody says they love it. Yeah the expense is big, but the weather, the scenery, the people, the air...the air is so fine there.

I hope so. I have never met anyone in LA who was dreamy about it (maybe I need to get out more). Direct from the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD)'s website:

AQMD is the air pollution control agency for all of Orange County and the urban portions of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, the smoggiest region of the U.S. We are committed to protecting the health of residents, while remaining sensitive to businesses.
