I know a lot of people from North Carolina that relocated to California and people that have relocated from Cali to North Carolina for 'affordability'. How do you feel about your decision to move to Calfornia or North Carolina.......Any regrets.....Do you miss it...Would you go back?

I guess it would depends when. Four years ago the housing price differences were gigantic; CA is still more expensive (at least the expensive parts of CA) but not like it was. Unemployment in CA was a lot less then. So, it really depends on when.

Also, it depends on where your family is.

My aunt and uncle moved from CA to a town near Asheville, NC and have never been happier. Friendly people, better weather(except a problem with snow and their septic tank the first winter), lower cost of living, etc. Based on their raving of the area, it's somewhere my family has looked to relocate with a few job opportunities that never panned out.

We moved from Calif to NC coastal because we were priced out of the housing market in Calif. and jobs .So since my husband and I grew up on the coast we thought we moved to East Coast but the same problem with illegal immigrants is Huge in NC as well. The pay is low because of the immigrants. So it was not a best choice for us and we end moving to Missouri and love it here. I do have to say I loved where we lived in NC and the beach are fantastic but we couldn't afford to live there due to low paying job.

The wages are lower in NC, but not because of illegal immigrants (although yes, there are probably plenty). Jobs like teaching and nursing pay less than in other places, and those jobs are not taken by illegal immigrants.

Wages are low partly because there are more potential workers than jobs (supply and demand). The jobs used to be in tobacco, farming, hosiery, textiles, and furniture. Three of those left because of NAFTA. Tobacco has shrunk for other reasons. Farming has shrunk because young people choose other paths, and so farming land has been sold to developers to build houses for the people from CA and the northeast. (The illegals aren't buying those houses, either.)

Another reason is that NC is not friendly to unions. (I hate to say that, because it sounds like I'm pro-union, but I'm not. That causes different problems.)

Another reason is that people from other parts of the country (yes, legal - U.S. citizens, even) have driven up housing costs (not a lot, but some) and taken the jobs.

I'm sure there are other factors that I don't know about, and this isn't the thread for this. But after three "illegal alien" posts, I wanted to clarify NC's economic environment a little.

I actually know several people who have relocated to Calif...and yes cost of living is higher and some things are less affordable....but they tell me they absolutely love it there.....They seem to be more happier than they were in NC....but then again..it could just be their personal preference.

I moved from California (born and raised) to Vegas to Charlotte, NC where I am now. I really do not like Charlotte. It's okay but I've always been an a California girl so if it's between the two, I'd rather been in California. The only reason I didn't move back to California from Vegas back in 2003 was because the cost of living there was crazy at that time and I was paycheck to paycheck.
