A planned Whole Foods Market and Burlington Coat Factory will breathe new life into the long vacant Kmart site on Ambassador Caffery Parkway.
A source close to the deal tells The Independent that the world’s largest organic and natural foods retailer has signed a letter of intent to construct a store at the site, on an outparcel at the corner of Ambassador Caffery Parkway and Ridge Road. Austin-based Whole Foods has long sought to open a Lafayette store, and speculation had heated up in recent months that it was looking at various south Lafayette locations. Whole Foods will face off against its smaller competitor, Fresh Market, which is based in River Ranch.
The Burlington deal is firmer, as the company has signed a lease on the old Kmart building, according to our source. Based in New Jersey, the national department store specializes in clothing and shoes.
Official word on the deal is expected to be released shortly.

Whole Foods, Burlington Coat slated for old Kmart - The Independent Weekly

My wife is seriously PUMPED about Whole Foods, especially considering that it will be only five minutes minutes from the house!

I would have preferred a Brazilian BBQ, but hey...

I knew Whole Foods was coming, it was inevitable. There are too many wealthy, fit people in Lafayette to not have one.

True enough. I'll just be happy to see the last of that old derelict Kmart! What an eyesore...

Finally. I had always why that piece of property sat vacant for so long in an area of the city seeing plenty of development.

It's not quite as bad as when a Starbucks locates inside another Starbucks...

Seriously though, the Burlington facility will be the anchor of a larger overall re-development at that location. Whole Foods will just be the first outparcel property developed. The property isn't big enough for extensive outparcel development, but there might be room enough for one or two more development opportunities, such as fast food, Walgreens, etc...

They need to put something in place of the abandoned gas station and the Hollywood video stores that went bust as well. That area is definitely way too busy to not be utilized.

I say turn it into a small park. It would add a scenic touch, something that intersection is in bad need of.
