Hello, everybody!

I am going to be moving to Lafayette, LA from New Jersey this fall to study at ULL.

I have heard nothing but great things about the city! I have a few questions, though. As a woman who may be living alone, where would be the safest areas to consider living? Are the areas close to the university safe? (I would like to live as close to the university as possible). Can anyone suggest apartment complexes near the university? What are the chances I'll be able to find a place to live that is walking distance? Anything else I should know before I make the trip?

Thanks for your help!!

I haven't lived in the area for several years now. Last time I was there UPA was the only apartment complex in walking distance. Speaking from personal experience, it is a rathole. You'd be better off looking at houses/rooms/condos in the vicinity if you don't want to live in on-campus housing. Try the local papers or the Quik Quarter.
As a female student, I felt safe around campus. I can't think of a time where I felt threatened and I used to do dumb things like walk around the neighborhoods around campus by myself at night.
If you want to avoid traffic, get a place near campus. Even the commute from apartments around Cajun Field is hellish.
The neighborhoods get sketchy around Simcoe St.

Lafayette is the one of the safest town in Louisiana. Try to find a apartment near college, you will be fine.

The on campus apartments have been completely rebuilt. They are only a few years old and are pretty decent for on campus housing. Ratholes they are NOT. They are located right next to girard Park too, which has a large walking track, some indoor sports gyms and a nice lake. Its a pretty great place to stay while attending the university. Now as for apartments outside of that, there are some further down the street and across from University but those arent as recommended. There is also University apartments located over on Bertrand and West Congress, and they are pretty nice too, but located away from campus. There are ULL buses that pick students up nearby though on a regular basis. What university life was like several years ago has been SUBSTANTIALLY improved. Entirely new halls, renovated buildings, a new parking garage, and updated eating facilities are found throughout campus. It has really been improved a lot in the last decade.

Are we talking about the same place here? There are the newer university owned apartments across from Girard (which I have never been in, but look nice on the outside) & then University Place Apartments back on Oakcrest. The last experience I had with them involved mold, ants, paper thin walls (can hear sneezing & coughing), holes in walls, loud neighbors, parties/get-togethers (and even barber services) on dirty balconies, rude management, trash in walkways, broken washer/dryers, broken dishwasher, overflowing dumpters, closed pools, etc. etc. That building has been there for decades. They can paint it all they want to make it look nicer. Unless they completely rebuild it, I doubt many of the structural problems have been eliminated.

As for the on campus bus, is there still the standard 30 min. + wait?

I was referring to the ones towards the back of the university, by the Art building. those are extremely nice.
why would anyone live in the other ones?

Anyone have any opinions of Cajun Village ? We have a just-turned-4-year-old, and are thinking of staying on campus. Is there enough space for a girl who likes to ride her bike and run through the house ?

Many new dorm will be open this year.

You can also live in the aprtment on West congress and just drive a block to Cajun field and get a bus ride to campus too.
Thats what I would recommend.
