what is the best town in Louisiana to live in and why? (New Orleans: best city, home)

Ok here we go again! I need info on towns here in Louisiana. I want to move and need to know the best town/cities and why so I can better decide where to move. Thanks for your help.

SBC, indeed, unless you're into really small towns. NO has hurricanes. BR is blah, plus hurricanes. Ruston is full of cows and college students. Monroe smells funny (Seriously, every time I drive through it stinks. What gives?)

As much as I've knocked Shreveport, it's honestly the best city to live in LA. That's why I left LA.

New Orleans of course (VERY BIASED).. seriously the best place in Louisiana is w.e. place feels right for you and as diverse as this state is from corner to corner I'm sure you'll find somewhere.

For me it's NOLA. It's home and it's a place that can't be duplicated. Baton Rouge and the Northshore are nice, They kinda have more of a Florida panhandle feel to me for some strange reason. Haven't been to SWLA enough to know what it's like although I would like to get a better feel for Lake Charles. Anything north of I-10 and I'd be sick. There is nothing wrong with CENLA and NWLA but the culture is just too different from what I like. nice places just wouldn't want to live there and Monroe stinks.

First of all, Shreveport area is one of the WORST cities to live in Louisiana, unless you live in South Highlands or across the river in Bossier City.

Second, Lafayette is the best place that can really be called a "city". Followed by Baton Rouge.

As far as smaller communities, Mandeville and Destrehan are nice. I also like Carencro, Gonzales, and Houma.

The Alexandria area has some good places to live but I'm not sure if I would go so far to consider it the best place in Louisiana. The are parts of Alexandria that you should definitely avoid. The good areas include west Alexandria, most of Pineville and areas to the north and east such as the 28 East corridor, Woodworth, and areas to the west of Alexandria towards Kincaid and Cotile Lakes. This area has good school by Louisiana standards. Some may find the area to be dull and boring, but it's more of a family oriented area in my opinion.

If you are going to live in Louisiana, you may as well live in SBC. Because anywhere else in the state you're still in Louisiana. What with it's reputation for being overly conservative and too slow to change, that's everywhere in this state. Culturally, many different areas in La. But politically, about the same everywhere. Sorry if I hurt anybody's feelings, but open your ears and hear what people say across the state. You'll soon discover what I"m talking about.

Why? 3 miles from Arkansas. And that's the only reason!

I don't feel qualified to answer, since I've only lived in Shreveport and Bossier, but I'll throw my hat in. Shreveport is nice, except for the stifling conservatism of the city, although like HDwell said, that is pretty much the prevailing school of thought anywhere in the state. And there are plenty of people who view that as a good thing. I don't, but it's not why I moved, Louisiana just wasn't big enough for me. Shreveport has good things going for it: lots of great golf courses, good universities, access to a lot of good hunting and fishing, and pretty vibrant nightlife. Also, if you want to live a little farther out from town, there are plenty of quiet little communities within a 30 minute drive of downtown.

All that being said, I love Lafayette. I've never lived there, so I can't say how it is to live there, but I've never heard a mean word spoken there; if you can relax, have a good time, and enjoy yourself, the people there will take you in as one of their own and give you the shirts off their backs.
