Hello all,

I am looking into a position with a defense contractor in Louisville. Not sure where exactly they are located yet, I am just curious about the area before I get serious with them.

I am married with two kids, 19 & 24, who will probably not move with us. We would be interested in a rural area in "horseland" if we came out there. Not sure what our budget would be; we are middle-class. I currently pay $720/mo for a 1BR apt in Huntsville AL in a decent neighborhood.

Anybody know how that compares to apartments in Louisville? I would be living alone at first until my husband can get up there, so I want a decnt neighborhood.

I would guess that you'd be working for Raytheon which is west of the Louisville Airport. Big guess, but we can use it as a starting point. If so, you'll need to drive at least 10-15 minutes to find a decent neighborhood. The farther east you can go, the better, although there are some good opportunities such as in the Highlands (along US31E between downtown and the I-264). You should be able to rent a very decent place for 650-750.

As far as buying when your hubby gets here, again assuming Raytheon, I would look to Georgetown-Lanesville IN (along I-64) or possibly Spencer County (Taylorsville). Oldham County is not likely a good choice for you because of the "no-kids" household, but resale values do hold pretty darn good here because of the superior school system.

It actually would be BAE, but you're close! They're on Rochester Dr. Not sure where that is in relation to the airport...

If your not worried about good public schools then I'd look in Southern Jefferson County in the Blevins Gap / Bearcamp Rd / area extending into northern Bullitt Co in the Barrellton area. That would be the cheapest rural land near your work area.

Spencer Co, Floyd Co IN would be a 30+ mile commute

Are you looking for short term apartment rentals, home purchase? Your original post said you're looking for an apartment.

I agree, that is a wonderful area with acreage and beautiful homes.
