You'll enjoy it if you like sparse crowds and crisp days.

The foliage will be spectacular during the second or third week. Some summer businesses will be closed, but the best ones will still be open.

Bar harbor is the Boston of the north. You hear about it and see it in the news but the majority of people do all they can to avoid it. I have not even been to that side of Acadia in many years truth be told I avoid Ellsworth in the summer.

Most of the 135 cruise ships come in September and October. Its a delightful time, and the trees change later than much of the rest of Maine due to the warm waters around the Island.

Moat everything stays open until the Cruise ships stop coming. All the really big ones like the QE2 come during those months.

And winter activities begin to start. Stuff that costs money in the summer happens for Free in the winter.

I prefer to be anywhere in Maine in the fall as opposed to the summer, the only reason we will be there in August is because my wife's schedule is limited to that. The best advice I can give is don't spend every minute in Bar Harbor, with the crowds cleared out it is much easier to see a lot of the state in a short period of time.

He means Route 9, just in case you didn't know that it was called the airline (Road).

Bar Harbor is not really wonderful for peeping unless you climb the mountains. And remember that Bar Harbor is not Mount Desert Island. The village of BH is just one village in the town of BH. And there are many other areas on the island(Southwest Harbor, Mt Desert, Tremont, Bass Harbor, Seal Harbor, etc.) that are more beautiful, IMO.
