Hi, a friend of mine says that you need to garage your car in Maine; otherwise, the battery will die. I can't believe that all rental apartments offer garages. Is this true? Thanks.

Why would a battery die if the car wasnt garaged?

The cold will sap the power out of a battery. But unless you are leaving the vehicle out all winter, in a snowbank, and never start the car, there is no problem. Most people do fine without a garage.

And even if it was true, it would be true for most of the northern tier states and Canada. Maine is not the Arctic, which is why it’s a challenge taking my dogsled team on a Walmart run.

I figured. Not everyone has a house with a garage. Especially people in apartments. Thanks for clarifying.

I was actually shocked at how many houses in Maine don't have a garage. Around here, an attached 2-car garage has been standard on any type of home for at least the last 25 years. Yet they still build new construction homes in Maine without a garage. Boggles my mind.

Not every garage is heated or attached to the house.

Start the car everyday and no problem.

Arctic circle may have a different procedure.

You can buy an engine heater or order it as an option on a new car, plug it in warmers the coolant for easier starts and less engine wear on start up. Keep the gas tank near full to keep moisture out of the gas.

A healthy battery is can survive the winters.

It also helps to disconnect the security system to prevent any unnecessary draining of the battery. I'll sometimes leave my car sitting at the airport for 3 straight weeks in the cold and have always had my car start.

Warm batteries have more bounce to the ounce. If you think you want a new battery, buy it before winter. If you have extra loads such as radios and inverters, buy the biggest battery your bracket will hold. Some people have an auxiliary battery, directly connected to the factory battery. Use 4 gauge or jumper cables to connect the two. Fasten the auxiliary battery down securely. Put it in a marine battery case to prevent anything like a folding chair from coming in contact with the aux battery.
