Thanks for the replies.

Speaking of Canada, is there a lot of mixing between the two cultures in Calais.

I imagine there would be a lot of truck traffic through town, is that true?

Is there a newspaper in Calais that can be accessed online?

Thanks for any info!

If by "two cultures" you mean the Canadian side and the American side, then yes, absolutely. I wouldn't say that there is a huge difference in "culture" though, because the backgrounds of many of us are very much the same.

There is a lot of truck traffic on the main street to the bridge, but that's it. Right now it's been cut because the trucks are only able to use one crossing. The amount of traffic from the north will be reduced even further when the new crossing opens.

The Calais Advertiser is the hometown paper here, but not all of the information is available online.

I remember reading an article one summer that during the War of 1812 the British came to St Stephens and dropped off cannon, powder, and shot for the town. They lined the cannon and balls along the waters edge pointing at Calais. They pointed over the river and said "if they give you any trouble start firing and come get us. "

So after the war was over the British came back to collect their weaponry. They went to the powder house to get the powder and found it empty. When asked what happened to it all the mayor of St Stephen said that "The last few years the Americans had nothing for firworks to celebrate Independance Day. So we let them borrow your powder. They said they'd give it back after the war."

According to the paper it was a historically true story. They say a Canadian is just an unarmed American with health insurance. There's you 2 cultures shot to pieces. Heck, most of our families here came from over there.

Hey, isn't Casper supposed to be up this week to look at houses? Has anyone heard from her? Maybe they're on the road.

hey!! I saw that CG! and *I* know that, but if I spelled it the right way it wouldn't be an A sound for most people... ok, you guys, for future reference when teasing the Canadians about their "ay", it's really spelled "eh"! Now, about that "Z"....

Well, I really hope Casper makes lunch! We haven't heard from her.... or Peachie.... Peachie, where are you?

oh, btw, my father's family came from Scotland by way of Prince Edward Island, as a good example of how blurred those lines of "culture" really are
