My gal told me that it'd been pretty 'nipply' here in Maine prior to the holidays...

Default Freezing rain!

My son and his Dad went snowmobiling up in the county over the weekend. Saturdays ride was messy, with freezing rain. In spite of them having heated electric shields, they had to keep stopping and clearing them off. They managed just under 200 miles.

We / they always stay at Russell's in Caribou. Donna (the owner) told the guys that she had been expecting 2 families from NY and they were late in arriving. Around 9PM, the two trucks towing trailers pulled in. One truck towing a 4-up was all stove up. His once covered trailer no longer had a cover. The truck had some "wrinkles" in it. The guy, his wife and 2 kids jumped out of the truck and started off loading 4 sleds. The family seemed fine but the sleds were pretty beaten up with a couple missing cowling's, broken windshields and bent handlebars. Apparently they had rolled the truck onto it's side and the trailer had rolled and wedged up side a pole. This happened some where on Rt 1 just south of Caribou.

9PM, after driving all the way from NY, they off load what's left of the sleds and start getting all suited up to go ride. My ex approaches them and tells them that the trails are really messy and visibility was horrible.
They told him, "no worries, we've got modular shields, we'll be fine." My guys watched 8 sleds ride off into the freezing rain under the cover of night.

My son and his dad woke up early yesterday morning to find there were only 2 of the 8 sleds made it back to the parking lot. Apparently they don't run real well with no cowling in the freezing rain! LOL! (Go figure) It turned out that 2 guys rode one sled back to Caribou and the others had to rent other rooms in St Agatha that night. That's sad.

Later in a separate incident, we read that a poor little 15 yr old boy from Windham died in a snowmobile accident in Portage due to excessive speed and poor visibility. That's tragic.

We understand that the weather can kill......it does down here, though it's usually heat or natural disaster related......but we also have learned that a little common sense can save your life! Too bad more people don't understand that. It's very sad to hear of senseless tragedy.

Or, perhaps it's nonsense! lol

We get those types of dingbats down here too, but it's in the summer... off they go in a little dinghy or small sailboat, with perhaps a life jacket, or perhaps not... and the next thing you know, they're very far from shore and the fog rolls in. Out goes the Coast Guard in hot pursuit... providing someone has seen them disappear into the pea soup, or perhaps not til much later when they're missed at supper or bedtime. Usually it's with sad results. Lost at sea because of stupidity and not respecting Mother Nature.

The other thing they sometimes do, is go for a walk on the frozen iceburgs along the shore at the bay. STUPID! They get going along, not realizing the tide is underneath the burgs and whoosh, into the sea they go with huge chunks of ice smooshing them with the rolling tide before anyone can rescue them, they're fish bait.

Sometimes ya have to wonder about this thing called 'common sense'.
