I am starting college at UMPI in Jan, I will be the oldest student there (Almost 50) (Female) does anyone have any advise for me? I will be driving one hour each way four days a week. (Yikes). Sometimes at night too. I have been in Florida for 30 years but back home to care for my aging mother.
Any words of encouragement?
Thanks
A

Grand Falls to PI...unfortunately as you probably already know it's not a direct route. Options are: Option 1, cross in Van Buren, then down Route 1 to Caribou, then PI. Option 2, cross in Hamlin, then down 1A to Limestone, across to Caribou, then PI. Option 3, take transcanada down to Perth, then cross in Fort Fairfield, then across to PI. I'll bet the best route is option 3. From Fort to PI isn't that bad and you'll probably make better time and see more people on Transcanada. I'd make a dry run before your first day of school just to ask at the border what paperwork they will want to see when you cross. I believe SEVIS is the system that will contain the necessary info on foreign students here in the US. You want to make sure that is all in order so you don't get delayed at the border.

I agree with this advise, positively pick option 3.

There are special regulations covering students from Canada. Contact your Foreign Student Adviser at UMPI. I'm sure they are experts.

I'd also go with the 3rd route given between Grand Falls and PI.

Depends on what you are going for as well, if you are in education check with that office first about the paperwork needed for crossing the border (the woman who is just getting done in that office is still there a few days a week and she has been doing this for 20+ years.) I doubt you'll be the oldest student at 50, there were several well into their 60's when I was up there.
