Dear Soon to be California Transplants,
Find a small apt you can rent by the month (check craigslist or realtor.com rentals) in any of these areas:
white marsh, parkville, cub hill, timonium, towson, hunt valley, bel air, abingdon, fallston, kingsville, owings mills, pikesville, mount washington.

Spend three months renting while you go searching and looking for a place that suits you best....

The most artsy (and adorably quaint as well as historic) areas in the area (45 min commute to Timonium) are:
IN BALTIMORE CITY
Mount Washington
Charles Village
Bolton Hill
Homewood
Roland Park
Federal Hill

OUTSIDE OF THE CITY
Timonium
Historic Timonium
Ruxton
Historic Ellicott City
Anneslie
Rodgers Forge
Stoneleigh

If you need professional halp, my realtor has seen me through 2 purchases and 2 sales in the Bel Air/Baltimore areas. She is very dedicated. She may even be able to assist you in finding a temp (monthy lease) apt until you find a place to buy since you are relocating. Her info is. Vicki Wiedel Cell Phone: (443) 243-0542 Fax: (410) 515-2014 Coldwell Banker Realty At the Festival in Bel Air. Tell her Joy sent you.

sjg,

Good luck with your move! You might want to steer clear of Dulaney Crescent aparments in Towson.

Thanks for the tip... know anything about Towson Crossing? Located at
34 Dowling Cir. It sounds like a good fit for us.

I lived in Mt Washington for a year while in college and know the area well. I would bet that you should be able to find the feel you want in a number of places around timonium. There is a Trader Joes' grocery store in Towson that is really good for vegetarians.

However, I think that $1K for rent may only be able to get you a studio or small 1br. If you decide on Mt Wash stay far away from willowbrook apts and mt washington apartments, both on greenspring ave right near the city line. Both have low rent but are real dumps that the management has not kept up correctly.
