We would love to move back to Carroll County, MD if we can afford it in retirement.

Even though we were only there for a few years in the early 2000's, I still consider it the best place we ever lived. The central MD area is simply beautiful and offers so much that interests us.

A few months back the very house that we had built in Taneytown was up for sale by the current owner. The price was right. How tempting! But that house is too big for our downsized needs and I can't go anywhere yet until we retire. So disappointing.

When I was a mere lad in grade school 60 years ago back in Arbutus, MD, they told us "Maryland was America in Miniature." They meant that you can go from the ocean to the mountains and get most of everything else in between.

Mt. Airy is in an excellent spot to retire, especially if one has owned a home there for years. I-70 gets you to DC or Baltimore where one can get Amtrak to the northeast corridor or points south. Minor league baseball nearby in Frederick or MLB in Baltimore along with the NFL.

TN is one of those "no income tax" states and it shows. I was there the other year, around Knoxville-Maryville area and trust me, the road system there sucks. You get what you pay for. Maryland is no paradise but it has a lot going for it.

Nothing in TN can compare to the crabcakes in Baltimore. Nothing.

Well people like what they like....
My brothers are always screaming at my parents that they need to move out of their house of 55 years in PG county and move to North Carolina. My Dad doesn't see the point. He can drive to the bay,the beach or the mountains within a couple hours. My parents already have a weekend place in the Eastern panhandle of West Virginia and a main house near all their doctors in suburban Md.It takes no effort to NOT MOVE.North Carolina isn't much cheaper or warmer, and for the moment at least, two out of three of their children and four out of five grandchildren live within 2-3 hours of their home.

I don't care much for Maryland, and doubt I will ever live their again but if they're happy i'm happy for them and my brothers should mind their own business.

Totally agree, they have no reason to move.

Actually we didn't find that to be the case. The roads seemed to be fine and one thing we really liked about that area was the highways ran all over Knoxville and getting around was easy.

In fact we came on construction with one lane closed and instead of paying 2 workers to hold signs they simply set up a generator and a portable stop light on either end that was very efficient. I commented "why don't we have that in Maryland?".

I've seen a traffic light setup like that on the eastern shore, when they were doing work on a bridge east of Easton. I think that was for an extended time though, a long time ago.

But the most extreme growth has taken place in Sussex County, where the population has grown by 40 percent since 2000 – to roughly 220,000. Much of this growth has been in shore towns.

I helped a friend move to Lewes, DE several winters ago. Traffic at the beach was horrible. I was surprised by how many people were calling the beach home year round. Since then, one of my co-workers has purchased a home in one of the newer developments just minutes away from the DE beaches.

Otoh, most of my co-workers are crossing the northern border into PA for retirement. They want to remain in the northeast and expect to pay higher property taxes for living in the northeast region. But they're happy their pensions won't be taxed by PA and that PA is a two party state.

MD's not a bad state. I just wouldn't want to live post career in the Baltimore-DC corridor. The problem is healthcare quality and options decrease the further you move away from the corridor.

That's pretty much S.O. P. in Europe.

That is one thing that I think people forget - MD and VA have locations that are relatively close to the beach and the mountains. Somewhere like Raleigh and Charlotte are probably further removed from both the beach and the mountains than most places in MD.
