My husband just accepted a job in Marlborough. We will be coming from Chicago and have a two year old and an 8 month old. We are looking to be in a safe area/neighborhood that is walkable to a grocery store, few restaurants, etc. We'd like to have other young families around. We will need at least a three bedroom, but a four bedroom home would be nice for family coming to visit. Budget: we need to stay under $4000/month, but ideally would stay under $3500. We are looking to rent for at least the first year we are there, so we don't need to worry about school systems just yet. I've read nice things on this forum about Brookline and Newton, but don't know if it's out of our price range. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for any help!!!

You won't find too many areas in the suburbs where you can walk to a grocery store. If your husband is working in Marlborough, I suggest looking in Westborough and Littleton to start. Brookline and Newton are closer to Boston but not the best location for a commute to Marlborough.

Thanks so much for the feedback. I apologize I didn't clarify, we would rather not be in suburbia, and would prefer to be in more of an urban area. Would Brookline or Newton be a terrible commute? We are used to traffic being in Chicago and all, but we really wouldn't want anything past an hour commute. Is this realistic or do we need to give up our dreams of living closer to the city? Thanks so much for your help!

It's probably be about 40-50 minutes and you'd be going against traffic so I wouldn't think it'd be too bad.

Brookline & Newton are pricey, though I have seen a few single family home rentals in that price range. Needham & Wellesley might also be worth a look (suburban but plenty of walkability from certain neighborhoods, although also pricey). Also, be sure to check with rentals that the house is deleaded. There's quite a bit of older housing stock here.
