Hello,

My wife and I are moving to the Northampton area and one of the issues we face is health insurance. What can you tell me about what is available in Northampton? Which would you recommend? Any info would be helpful.

Your choice of health insurance carrier will be dependent on your employer(s). So there really isn't anything to tell you in regards to details particular to Northampton. If you aren't planning on working or can only find part time work, then any general information about MA state health insurance options would apply to you.

The ugly in general is that health care costs are way too high in the US.

A good place to start is the Mass. Health Connector website. You can look at pricing if you were to buy your own insurance, i.e., if you were self employed. You plug in your dates of birth, and it gives you quotes from the different insurers. Of course, if you have insurance available through an employer, it will likely be cheaper, though may be poor coverage. It varies a lot from one company to the next. I work in the health care field, so am familiar with many plans.

Thank you both for your info. I believe that we will be eligible for the subsidized plans as a self employed family. In Northampton that would be BMC or CelticCare. What are your opinions about these two healthcare providers?

How would you have BMC in Northampton? Your over 100 miles away from BMC.

snatale1,

BMC Healthnet shows as one of the two health plan providers for the Northampton area. Check it out here: www.mahealthconnector.org

As I'm on the north shore, I haven't encountered either BMC or CelticCare, so unfortunately can't comment on them.
