If you want a really affordable place to live in a rural area with not big bucks, consider looking way out west in the northwestern part of the state. If you're more independent and looking for scenic, rural area, look into Franklin County, MA (i.e. Greenfield and the surrounding towns) or at North Adams, Adams, Cheshire, Lanesborough, New Ashford, or at one of the "Hilltowns" (Savoy, Windsor, Cummington, and Becket all come to mind). And, if you're not so independent, give Pittsfield a look.
