I am planning on graduate in May 2008. I am in the process of completing my last 16 credits. I will have a B.L.S. with a specialization in legal studies. I have three children, and I am looking for very good school for them ( magnet or gifted program). I will need an affordable place in a decent neighborhood to rent.I am also looking for career opportunity, and I will need to further my education, so I will need a good university for my master and doctoral degree or law school if possible.
Any information will be helpful.

Thank you so much

It would be easier to make a comparison if you said what part of KY you're considering. As for what you have said you're looking for, I'm not familiar with your field, and so can't give thoughts on how the job opportunities would compare. However, Boston is a larger city than any in KY, and so is likely to have more job opportunities. This can get tricky, though, since there may also be more people competing for the same job in a larger city. That's where it would help to have someone familiar with your field, and the competition for jobs in the field in different areas, weigh in. Other than that, basically what you're looking at is a lot more colleges to choose from in MA, for when you're ready to continue your education. The tradeoff is that MA will cost more than KY. In the Boston metro area, where most of the colleges are, it will cost a lot more.

Default Wish I am smart

I do not know any gifted program in public school in MA. They usually only move them 2-3 grades up..

Of the 62 million school-age kids in the U.S., only about 62,000 have IQs above 145. Do your kids have higher than a 145-IQ?

Great school is like great car...

My definition is different than yours....

Can you be more specific as to what you are looking for in a school?

Last of all, money.... What is your budget and expectations...

2-bed Apartments here start $1400 + utilities ... that can be as high as $1800-2000/month. Car insurance is one of the most expensive in US. It can easily run you $1,000.

Great school for me is one in a safe neighborhood-no crimes-teaching not test taking only (FCAT) but teaching knowledge for life.
I am expecting to get a job as an entry-level paralegal (30k-35k). Rent should not be more $1500+utilities+insurance.We mostly eat veggies,so cost of food is not really a problem.
Would like to be near public transportation as well.

Thank you smarty

Let's see...Boston, Louisville, and Lexington....there is no comparing any of these cities as they are totally different sizes and shapes. Compared to Boston, Louisville is much smaller and will have less amenities, but Louisville is also substantially larger than Lexington. I live in Louisville and love it, but it is no Boston either culture or arts wise. However, it is much cheaper, has less traffic, and offers some things Boston does while oferring warmer weather. Louisville has great historic areas and good magnent schools. Lexington is more of a smaller college town that centers around UK, and almost all the best jobs in Lexington are associated with UK.

Thank you STX12499,

How about the job market for paralegal? Is it possible for me to find a job? It does not have to be in a law firm. It can be anywhere from insurance companies to corporations.
Tell me about rent, cost of life in general in Louisville.
Any info will be appreciated.
N.B. Boston was a suggestion from one of my friends.

One of Louisville's advantages is offering mild weather with four seasons and a very very low cost of living. Very nice rentals can be had for $600-$700 a month. You could get a spacious, luxury two bedroom with pool and club access for 800 per month in desirable areas of the city and suburbs. Here is a list of some cool things about the city from a great altweekly which I recommend you read (it comes out every wednesday) to get a feel for the city's vibe.

Louisville is a nice midsized city-it is 4 times bigger than Lexington but about four times smaller than Boston. There are tons of major law firms with a regional and national prescence, and the job market is pretty decent, so I would think finding a job would not be a problem. Louisville's tongue and cheeck national branding campaign, which has raised some eyebrows:

A BRIEF intro to the city:

Louisville travel guide - Wikitravel

Louisville has some definite downsides..although traffic is light, there is no commuter rail like Boston. It is inland and also not as close to cool cultural places like NYC. Also, the architecture is great but cannot compare to that in Boston. If you are into designer shopping, Louisville does not have a great deal of that, but there are a few options to get some higher end brands like Armani. All and all, I am surprised you are interested in such a wide array of cities! Surprisngly, Louisville has an amazing restaurant and arts scene. It is very similar to what you would find in Boston, just on a much smaller scale. Louisville is seeing a wondeful downtown renaissance. Here are examples of some projects:

Museum Plaza

Iron Quarter | Louisville, KY

RiverPark Louisville Kentucky, Lofts and Luxury Condos

More in store for downtown

Louisville Arena Authority
