I lived about 15 years in Mass. I live in Florida now and I could never stand the cold weather there but I do wish I could return. I hope to one day bring my daughter there and show her where I went to school. I also want to show her the homes I grew up in AND of course Kilbourne hill across from the elementary school I attended. I remember going all the way to the top and riding the sled down the snowy slope...seems like a million years ago.
I attended Browning Elementary and later Atlantic Union College. I lived in Sterling, South Lancaster and then later in Shrewsbury and Worcester.
When I was a child, I lived in Sterling, just down the road from the house that Mary, of Mary had a little lamb fame. We drove by it everyday.
I grew up steeped in history and playing in the woods. I collected wildflowers and did alot of birdwatching. The fall is so beautiful there, with the brightly colored leaves.
We can't forget the wonderful seafood.
We used to go to this Ice cream place over near Boxborough, it was amazing, they made their own ice cream and were so popular that they had to have policemen to direct the traffic, there was a fake black and white cow out front, Kimballs, thats what it was called. It was amazing !!! Being able to eat an entire Kimballs special was like a rite of passage, you were a grown up if you could eat it all...
My Mom always went out during the different fruit seasons, we would pick apples, then we would pick strawberries, blueberries etc. She would freeze them and then we would have them until the next year. We had a great garden as well.
I had alot of good times there. I would LOVE to spend an entire summer there. I have returned to school to get my nursing degree, once I am done I would like to look into getting a job up there for like 3 months and spend some time up there, showing my daughter around. Salem with the witches, Rockport just because its pretty, Plum island because of the wonderful board walk and birds, Boston, the walking tours you can take, Fanuel Hall, Anthony's One...so many wonderful places...

Well, if all goes well we will come back to live by August. We moved back to Southern California to be near family but our hearts are still in Boston. We miss everything so much. I don't even go on the Los Angeles site anymore because it is so negative. Barely ever see that for Ma. except that it can be expensive, but not by Los Angeles standards! I loved the last description of what is missed. Such great memories to have. Can't wait to create new ones myself with my son and husband!!

I was born and raised in the Metro West (Natick/Framingham) and I miss it so much. I live in Texas, the Dallas area. Nothing against Texans, I have yet to meet one that was actually born here, but I HATE THIS PLACE. I can't wait to be home. How many Chili's restaurants can you possibly have in one city? I miss the mom and pop restaurants. I can't wait to have a clam roll (mmmmmmmmm )

My family left Mass. about 1680 and settled in York, ME. We haven't looked back since, though we occasionally visit.

YEAH! We recently moved to Worcester from Virginia and soon I'm going to have to take a trip down south and I DON'T WANNA BUDGE. I don't wanna have to deal with all those strip malls and the fakery. Maybe people in Mass. aren't all sunshine and warmth but they have more common sense than the entire population of the Bible belt.

My folks in Virginia called, they are already sweating their butts off and have the air conditioning on, on the 2nd freakin' day of May! Whatever...

"We're the 5'2" guy that will kick your ass!"
BRILLIANT!!!...or shall I put it like like this "youah wickid smahht" Thank you for your frank outline of the positives Massachusetts has to offer. I appreciate your authentic Massachusetts spunk that can't easily be found elsewhere. You get the essence of a real new englander in this quote. Rock on!!

I mean or is the grass just always greener somewhere else? Are you overlooking the flaws of other places? Like pollution in Texas, racism that is still everywhere in the South, intolerance, poor labor law... etc etc etc.

The South is built like a deck of cards, heavily dependant on Federal money- which in this Congress is about to shift direction from the southeast to the northeast, and growth- which thanks to India and China is about to slow down. People only move to where the jobs are. And when youre a corporation in Boston, NY or Philly I think the next stop is Calcutta and Beijing... not Atlanta, Dallas, Raleigh-Durham. And then in the case of Atlanta you get high foreclosure and depressed real estate(3rd worst in the US) smog, HORRIBLE traffic not just urban traffic, a 3 billion dollar sewer upgrade that state is dragging its feet on, a water problem waiting to happen, 50th in the country SAT scores, and corruption in a very needed road project(Northern Arc) so bad that they just decide to scuttle the whole thing. And the property taxes as a percent of market value arent all that great either people!

I'll take cold, old, ugly Yankee New ENgland anyday! Besides... this place actually is changing for the better, too many choose not to see it. Zoning law changes are putting more supply in the market here- smaller houses, townhouses, and many many more apartments being built. Not to mention so many New Englanders are adding on and renovating their houses at an amazing rate! This place is actually cleaning up. Come back- drive around, open your eyes and mind a bit. We're also about to legalize gambling which will likely give us the second or third largest casino in the WORLD. New businesses and commercial renovations are skyrocketing.

Not to mention first in the nation universal healthcare well on its way. Equality for ALL of its residents. I'm straight and am proud of our decision on gay marriage!

Y'all left. And you took the old Massachusetts attitudes with you.

So there... there's my rant!

As a Massachusetts resident....I have to say that I enjoy the new england rudeness.......it's REAL.....and dare I say...VERY entertaining. It's entertaining the same way "the soup nazi" on Seinfeld was entertaining. I guess you really have to have a sense of humor to appreciate the Massachusetts way

Default missed not growing up in Ma.

I want to tell those of you who shared such rich and wonderful memories of growing up in New England really touched me. I was reading one of the posts to my husband about their childhood experiences and wishing their own child could experience the same, and found myself crying while reading it. I think I was crying for the childhood I had missed not growing up in New England. The apple picking, the sledding down a steep neighborhood hill, the first snowfall, the neighborhood ice cream stand, playing in the woods and making forts. The best Halloween ever and beautiful Christmas's. Just don't get those kind of memories in Southern California and definetly do not have the same great quality of life as in growing up a New Englander. I wish my son could have experienced the same kind of events in his childhood. Hopefully, he will have wonderful experiences as a teenager in New England to share with his children. Thanks for the memories.

No matter how long I am away from New England, I will still wish to at least be able to visit regurlarly.

Its a beautiful place, steeped in history and beauty.

There is a place in Boston we used to go when I was a child, I think it was called The Arboritum...beautiful land right in Boston...it was like being in the country. We would take a picnic and hang out in the grass.

I was born in raised in the boston area and i miss it a lot. Now i live in Maine and am not proud to be in the most made fun of state. It's not all that bad though it's just a more boring, easy life.
