Malden is the town with the subway stations, and lots of bus service. Medford has buses but no subway. Melrose has the suburban atmosphere, but to get to the city you'd need to use commuter rail (fast and comfortable, but expensive and infrequent) and some buses which take you to the subway in Malden. There really are some decisions ahead.

incorrect. Wellington is in Medford. Thats the orange line.

And while Melrose technically has no subway, Oak Grove in Malden is right on the border.

The extension of the green line through Somerville and Medford has been approved for federal grant.

Sigh. Correct. But note that only a small residential neighborhood in Medford is within walking distance of Wellington station, plus the new apartment complexes that were placed there after the subway was built. And the same applies at Oak Grove--hardly anyone in the older parts of Melrose can walk to it, though again there is an apartment complex that was built so as to take advantage of the station.

As for the green line extension, it would be a fine thing--if it ever happens.

I lived in Malden for a few years and of the three places, I would give Malden A+ for getting around without a car. Tons of buses from two subway stops, and a commuter train stop at Malden Center station.

Malden drug ridden and going downhill but its safe. No one will bother you. Watch out for muggers at the T and needles in the play ground. Say hello to your neighbor but don't be to pushy. Be observed and observe St the same time. I've lived here 12 yrs. Moved from the slums of Roxbury. I live with my kids whom were raised here and we live alone in a somewhat sketchy neighborhood. If ya a racist don't come to Malden. I'm bi-racial my neighbors are all raises and there's slot of Hebrew and Muslims moving into Malden as well. Cops are *******s. Just carry mase you'll be fine!

to Lissa61782: your post is contradictory, never heard of a drug ridden place that is safe and to assume everyone is racist is very close minded. Why would you subject your kids to this environment as you describe your neighbor sketchy? I have never seen needles at the playground, I have been to all of the in Malden. If you see needles please report this to the city, so they can removed. Every T can have a problem with muggers, as that's a common place they can hang out even in the most affluent neighborhoods.

I have lived in Malden for quite a while and never noticed drug ridden problem. I feel it is safe and a very diverse population. Over the past 4 years Malden has been changing for the better, its affordable, friendly and has easy access to the orange line T.

When my friends and family come from out of town, they noticed that people are very friendly. I feel safe here and also glad friendly police are monitoring the neighborhood, just like when I lived in Newton and Watertown.

I have lived in Malden pretty much all my life, and I can tell you that Malden has a pretty bad drug problem, thanks to our proximity to Rt. 1. But, for the most part, if you keep to yourself, Malden is about as bad as any suburb north of a Major City.

We have great Access to Boston on the Orange and the Commuter Rail, and the People who live here are friendly.
