Almost no one in this society has that much saved up. Certainly a young person won't have it. It just isn't realistic.

What year was that? I moved to SF in the late 90s with nothing and no college degree but the economy and job market was booming especially in the tech sector so I got a good job in about a week. The world is much different today

I would agree. At age 24, if you have $1K in the bank you are probably doing better than most of your peers.

I wouldn't listen to all these naysayers -- you are young and you will be fine as long as you can hustle. You wont live in a nice place or a nice n'hood most likely, but it is a large and diverse city with jobs and opportunities. No young person has a years worth of savings! Not many people do period.

Rent just a small room to start with maybe in Dorchester or Roslindale, somewhere like that, cheap. Keep your wits about you, it isn't the safest area, but it is doable for a while. The T or buses can get you everywhere so don't worry about transportation. Get any kind of job to start with, just to have income. Most but not all of Boston is gay friendly, there are still pockets of knuckledragging so just be aware of that especially in older more working class n'hoods (and racist too). Also Bostonians can be abrasive and/or reticent so don't take that personally, it is just the way of the place. But it is overall a progressive, educated, and elegant city with lots of opportunities for work and education -- much luck to you!

Also maybe there are some places that offer housing assistance/general assistance to refugees? I don't know. But I'd look around if I were you.
