Natick to Harvard on the train is rough since you really do have to go to S. Sta. and back out. A better commute would be something on the Fitchburg line to Porter.
Nothing really wrong with Natick other than a lot of stores, which is good in its way but leads to a lot of congestion. It is not as tony as many of the towns around it, but that makes it less expensive and less pretentious. 35-60 mins. by car sounds right. It takes me, without traffic, only about 15 minutes from Natick service plaza by Exit 13 to the Allston tolls. You have to add the time getting to the Pike and then up Soldiers Field Rd to Harvard. But it's often congested in the Harvard area and the Pike will be backed up at rush hour, and you need to park and walk from wherever you park. Parking is pretty expensive if you don't have it through work.
If you drive get the Fast Lane or EZ Pass. Saves time and Fast Lane for commuting is (or at least was) deductible on Mass. income taxes.
