True. Especially if keeping it for years.

Very valid point.

I'll spend $9 on a JP Licks ice cream sundae and such, plus tip, much too often -- but skimp out on a quality mattresss. Crazy thinking.

It's just my current mattress is so outdated that even a cheap one, short-term, would be an upgrade.

I am a real princess and the pea when it comes to mattresses and I personally like the Ikea mattresses in the 300-400 range. I don't think you need to go higher than $600.00 even for a queen. I would not go any lower in price than that. They have a good guarantee on their products, something like 25 years and are good about taking back products that don't work out.
Thanks!

Also, we got a mattress for my son from amazon and it seems good.

Maybe just buy a dirt cheap one at Big Lots to hold you over while you save up for a decent one. You're on the road? Pack a cooler full of food. Coffee drinker, stick with McD's any size for $1 (I probably started saving $75/month from that alone). In a few months you will be there! I hate it when posters on here give unsolicited advice, but occasionally I'm guilty too LOL.

A mattress pad to put on top of your old mattress may be a good inexpensive option.

We did get a memory foam topper for our old mattress, and got another couple of years out of it. But that topper was still about $200. Just a mattress pad isn't going to do much if the mattress itself is shot.

(The biggest problem with our memory foam topper was that it was HOT. We have a King sized mattress, and we put our old mattress in our guest bedroom, but we needed to get a new frame to accommodate that mattress, so my husband got one on amazon, but it is much taller than our old frame. Now, with this topper, our guest room bed is so tall, some people need a small ladder to get into it. But I couldn't bear to throw out the expensive topper and we had nowhere to store it. So on the guest bed it stays.)

I'm sure there are much better ones but this mattress topper is only $28, has good reviews, supposedly keeps you cool, and isn't tall (I don't know if that's good or bad).

It could be used as a stop-gap, and I did look at those types of pads. It could help a bit, but I'm not optimistic that it would really help very much for very long. If you're really desperate and just can't get a new mattress for a while, for whatever reason, it's worth a shot, I suppose.
