Why do we not have the Walmart Superstores like other states? It would be great to have everything in one place-groceries, clothes, electronics, etc., and they don’t require a membership like other warehouse stores.

Do you mean Super Markets (Neighborhood Markets) or Super Stores (Supercenters)? As for the latter, there are a bunch in MA. Even most of the older traditional Walmarts have been expanded into Supers and now sell full groceries. I have never seen a Neighborhood Market in MA. Not sure what the appeal is either. Walmart is pretty lousy for groceries, plenty of much better options around.

I meant the superstores. I’ve been to other states and the walmart superstores have full groceries, electronics, clothes, etc; unlike the walmart stores that just sell some quick food items like bread, milk, soda.

The Walmart nearest my house has a grocery store. They have a produce dept.,deli, bakery, pretty large meat selection, frozen foods, several isles of groceries, dairy, etc. The only thing I noticed they don't have is fresh fish. Other than that, you can get a lot of food there.

i don't patronize Walmart. They are owned by horrible people and treat their workers terribly. They are also, more than any other single entity, responsible for the overall decline in quality of goods available for sale and the whole mentality that everything is disposable -- i.e., lawnmower breaks? Spend two hundred bucks and get one that will last a couple years and then buy another one, rather than buying one that will last for decades even if you might have to fix it once in a while.

But, the superstores, like Mejier and Target and others that offer grocery shopping and household goods all in one stop aren't as common in cities and in the northeast for a couple of reasons -- first, in cities, there often wasn't the physical space for them (although they have crept into some cities when space has been made available -- like old factories or other abandoned areas were re-designated for retail, etc.) Also, there is a greater dedication to locally owned businesses here, which I think is a good thing. More of the population is willing to go out of their way to support the local shop owner, so they aren't as excited to see someone like Walmart.

I am glad they aren't around here. I don't need to buy my electronics and clothing in the same place where I buy my groceries.

It depends where you are in the state. South and west of I-495 where it's less affluent, they're all over the place.

Eastern Massachusetts has Market Basket. If you're picking between Walmart and DeMoulas for food shopping, most people would pick the Market Basket chain. That's based on either price or quality.

In an Amazon and B&H Photo universe, do people really buy electronics at Walmart? It's also not a place where I'd buy clothing.

I buy branded consumables at Walmart and that's about it. A Supercenter adds no value.

Isn't there a Supercenter in Raynham? No, I would never buy clothes at Walmart, either.

Here's the list of Walmart Supercenters in Massachusetts:

Swansea
North Attleboro
Raynham
Whitinsville
Fall River
Walpole
Leominster
North Dartmouth
Plymouth
Worcester
Saugus
Avon
Hudson
Halifax
Raynham
Leicester
Northborough
Wareham
North Oxford
Hanover

From Wikipedia....

The "Supercenter" portion of the name has since been phased out, with these stores now simply referred to as "Walmart".

Like them or not, there are 20 Walmart Supercenters in MA located east of Springfield.

I have claimed I am not a Walmart shopper but yet I did shop in one recently. I found myself with a list of things that would have required 4 or 5 stops. Grocery, drugs, hardware, pet supplies, office supply. I knew I could make one stop at Walmart and get it all and I did. Granted, I did buy national brand products versus mess with unknown stuff but convenience ruled the day.

Oh, I would never buy "Walmart" brands or their meat, either. And you still have to go to the pet department to get pet supplies, but they have lots of national brands.

The store I mentioned in my previous post is the Walpole store. That wasn't built as a supercenter but retrofitted later.

It's not a place I'd want to shop in on a regular basis.
