Such a hub for tech jobs.

Really? that's great news. I did another quick search for autism centers close to Pittsfield, and its wasn't the most promising. Again, it was a very quick search. I'll try areas a bit closer to see. I currently commute half an hour every day for my daughter, so I don't mind the same sort of daily routine.

However, I did do a good search for homes there and the prices are surpsingly low. Is it just the distance from the Boston? I feel like the state is so small that it can't just be that it is rural, can it? (Truly asking)

No no no. It was a joke. Sorry.
The vast majority of the tech jobs are inside 495. Pittsfield is not a place you want to look at.

Can you at least expound on why Pittsfield isn't a place to look at for her? She stated she didn't want to live in the area you're pointing toward. Pittsfield may not be a tech "hub", but it is only 40 miles from Albany, NY, which is a metro of over a million people. Surely there would be tech jobs there. She would have to look into the tax and reciprocity laws between NY and Mass., but it could work out nicely if they're set on finding an area of Mass. that's affordable for them.

1) Pittsfield to Albany is a 50 minute drive.
2) The Albany metro stretches mostly west, making 50 minutes a conservative estimate.
3) Albany is not a tech "hub". I mean sure, they have jobs, but not the same as Austin or Boston.

There are/were a growing number of tech jobs around Malta/Saratoga Springs, but that is north of Albany. Definitely not a feasible commute.

Ah, well I guess it makes a lot of sense now that the homes in Pittsfield aren’t too pricey, although it was beautiful.

Many of the jobs do seem remote, at least partially. If once or twice a week we must make an hour commute, I think we would- for the right homes/schools/therapy centers. But that would be up to the employer.

Thank goodness the state is so small.

I doubt very much that area will suit your needs. There is a good reason it's cheap out there. If you can't move to the Boston/495 area, you'd be better off staying in Austin.

We’ll see— we still have quite some time to do some research/job hunting. If our work is primarily remote- I imagine that might change quite a few things for us. Especially if acreage isn’t 100% a must have for our first home in MA.

Mmmm....there is a lot more to Mass then the eastern part. I am kind of surprised that you would say to stay in that area. If after careful research they can find a job in a decent commuting time there is some absolutely wonderful rural areas out here in the rest of the state.

I, too, have an Autistic child. He just turned 14. We live in Worcester and it has been a godsend living here. We are city people so living in Worcester works for us but if you want rural and under 400, 000$ it is pretty easy to do out here. You can commute into Worcester for services. I am very anti ABA (check with autistic adults to see why) but that is your call.

If you can find jobs close enough look west of Worcester for cheaper homes with acreage. Either way good luck. I know i would move heaven and hell for my son. I am sure you feel the same.
