I think zoning and building permits are supported by local residents too.
Wellesley, Weston etc. have many unused land lots and are relatively close to Boston. If we build some affordable apartment complexes there, I am sure the business will be excellent. But imagine what the residents will say...
As a practical thing, I think you want to build high density affordable housing in places that won’t oppose it and near good public transportation so it doesn’t crush road infrastructure. As long as public schools are town fiefdoms, you’re not going to be able to build high density housing in the blue chip suburbs. The legal costs of the pitched battle destroys the economics.
The lack of local media and obsession's with privacy lead to a lack of transparency. Heck Duxbury and Concord are quite affluent and look what happened.

So in other words "there is no transparency in affluent suburban communities due to the lack of a local press covering them, proven by these stories covered in the local press".

The Newton and Concord examples are the same incident.
Unfortunately, by the end of the article the strong words of the new MIAA executive director went from "plans to take a strong stand to promote civility and the safety of student-athletes" to "I am highly reluctant to burden schools and districts with yet another layer of bureaucracy and compliance." He's instituted student-athletes watching a movie and signing a pledge.
The MIAA won't do anything that will affect it's ability to get money from the schools. The previous executive director was earning $196K from the MIAA with the total of the executive staff being paid almost $800K. At the same time, their revenue and reserves were plunging. The former ED is now pulling $175K annually from the MIAA retirement fund.
Well the thing is frankly I recall the priest sex scandal nearly 20 years ago and we have to have some checks to keep kids safe. Back in the day almost anyone could have walked into a school. Now even volunteers might have to pass cori checks. We can't let this pass.
