We have immigration policy, it just needs to be enforced.
Laws need to be enforced, sure...but we don't have a policy that deals with the current reality, has bipartisan support, and works with the countries of origin to stem the flow of migrants. That's also why the DACA question has not been resolved. Everything else is a band-aid. A candidate got elected in 2016 by managing to convince enough people that a border wall equated to a "policy".

It's one of the most important issues we have before us but it's largely ignored by the politicians. Can something only be done on a bipartisan basis? If so, it could be hopeless.
I've read that it does no good to throw money at the countries of origin because they are corrupt and will not use the money to help their people and fix the problelms. Useless to try to deal with those countries.
So the rules aren't enforced (they're certainly enforced for LEGALS!) just because of wanting cheap labor? How about the money it costs to educate all these kids who don't speak English? It makes a mess of schools and it causes overcrowding in housing and poverty in cities. We can't keep absorbing so many thousands of people.
If one party could promise to fix the immigration problem as it stands today, that party would win. I don't think the regular people of either party want this mess to continue.
A border wall and other barriers is a large part of the policy, the other part is actually deporting those who are residing here unlawfully. We had agreements with Mexico and other Central American countries to stop the flow. Remember "Remain in Mexico"? Yea, that's gone now and they are flowing in as a result.
The US has one of the most generous immigration procedures in the world. We let in 1 million people a year legally. They have permission. The border jumpers don't.

Respectfully disagree--a wall is not a policy and does nothing to address the roots of the problem. But it was good for getting people to contribute $$ to Steve Bannon's yacht fund. The "Remain in Mexico" policy was only discontinued in late Aug, whereas the numbers have been going up for years with that policy in place.

You're right, and those on the ground whose job it is to secure the borders agree with you. We don't address this because politicians want votes and money. They want future votes from the illegal migrants, and they want to enable cheap labor for big corporations. While legal migration generally does not suppress wages, illegal migration does. Illegal migration also causes a host of other problems including human trafficking, increase in crime, and national security and public health risks.
How out of control do people want the US to get with South Americans and Mexicans ?
US would actually get a lot better if we had a large influx of educated and highly skilled folks from South America and Mexico, I’d take them over an average modern-day screeching, red-faced, bible or das kapital-thumping brainwashed yankee any day of the week. Though needless to say that’s not who’s showing up at the border.

They are mostly the "white" people who run things down there. They don't want to leave.
