just razzin ya, xstonedrocker

You'll be struggling with only 30k a year of income. Sorry to burst this thread's bubble. Maybe enough to survive as a single person... but not really live that well. Forget visiting family back on the mainland with that salary. Anyways, it has been stressed A LOT before: have an exit strategy.

BTW, contrary to the tone of this post, I like living here on Maui :-) But I don't think it would be worth it if the cost of living here forces you to struggle too much.

Yeah I realize he's a single person and we're a couple, that post was 90% a joke. We know we won't be able to visit family back home unless we have really good jobs. The way I think of it is: he makes way more than minimum wage now and we saved for 4 months to be able to come to Maui the first time. So we won't be able to come back here unless it's under the same circumstances. Makes sense to me. No, visiting family in the midwest won't cost as much as a hawaii vacation, but I think that's still a good way to think about it to be on the safe side..Plus we won't have vacation time at our jobs in Maui (assuming we get them). We've gotten ok with the fact that we won't be able to see family and friends again for a minimum of a year.. Unless we fail, then we'll see them in 6 months. Yay?

And we do have somewhat of an exit strategy. No we don't own a house that's totally paid for and we'll just move right back and have a job waiting if it doesn't work out. If we did, this wouldn't be a risky move at all and I know it is. But like I said, according to our calculations (of course we can't plan for every single thing, we're trying to, but could still be off and need to make some adjustments) we have enough to survive for 6 months while we look for jobs. If we don't make it by 6 months, we have to come back and that's that. We already have a return ticket paid for. We'll be crushed, but we'll know we tried and trying this is something we have to do. Not trying is even more of a failure in our minds.
