I could be wrong but I don't think this applys to an island in the middle of the ocean

I'm pretty sure that if you attempt to drive a Hawaiian rental car to Las Vegas, you will violate some obscure rental clause.

The road looks a heck of a lot better than it did when I drove it almost 20 years ago. Thanks for posting this!

Wow, you missed the point entirely! The GPS technology allows the car rental companies to track where their rental cars are driven. The rental car companies could electronically detect when you drive in areas that would violate the terms of your contract. It would be very easy to implement automated logging of the violations. I don't know if a rental car company would do that, but they could do it, as long as GPS devices work in Hawaii. I assume GPS devices do work in Hawaii, since my GPS covers Hawaii.

LOL! Sherwoody, thank you for explaining this apparently complicated concept.
It gave me a good laugh to start my day.

BTW: Davephan, does the GPS work under water? (Joke alert, for the clueless).

He's probably unaware that the bridge to the mainland hasn't actually been completed yet.
