Aloha all,

We'll be visiting Maui for the first time next month and we have a choice to book either a Corolla or a Rav 4. The price difference is very small for the week that we'll be on the island. It's just my significant other and myself on this trip so just wondering what would be the ideal form of transportation on the island between these two choices.

We'll be driving quite a bit since we want to see all that the island offers. I imagine we'll be hopping on and off quite often. My main concern is comfort but as well as ease of driving the roads of Maui. When we visited Big Island, there were many narrow roads, sometimes enough for only 1 car, so when head on traffic was there, it became quite a situation in our convertable. Do we need to worry about narrow roads on Maui? If so, I think the Corolla would be a good choice strictly for the manueverability aspect of it.

Either way, we're excited, but want to know your opinions on what we should get.

Thanks in advance!

I don't want to sound negative, but another good thing about the Corolla is having a trunk. Anything you leave in the car will be far safer locked in a trunk that out in a cargo area. Having said that, you really shouldn't leave anything of value in the car when it's parked, particularly if you're on the beach or hiking. Everybody here knows how to spot rental cars and they are major targets for break-ins.

There are some narrow roads on the way to Hana, out in the woods upcountry, and around Kahakuloa way, but plenty of room for either the Corolla or the RAV4. I drove an Expedition to Hana and back once. Mistake.

Best of luck.

Both of these statements are true. On the other hand, fitting beach chairs, boogie boards and umbrellas in a cargo area is easier.

Oh ya, didn't really think about the car break-in situation. I've always heard about it, but totally slipped my mind. We usually don't carry anything with us on our trips (besides from the airport to the hotel and vice versa. No bulky items either so we may be fine with the Rav 4.
