The roads are predictable, the "turn in the road" is the MELT-DOWN.

OK, I didn't mean to start anything here.

I just wanted to let people know about the possible dangers of this road. We stumbled onto it by chance. Its NOT clearly marked, there's nothing to let you know its a one-lane road with two-way traffic. Yes, people use it all the time, and its mentioned in many guide books. The scenery is spectacular, but we were too busy concentrating on staying alive to enjoy it!

At least be forewarned! Avoid at night especially!

At least they'd use part of the kala to pay your airfare over to Oahu, that's Aloha spirit

Just sayin, think your lenses are a bit out of whack
That's hilarious!!!! However, I'm certain I'd do just fine, even in Pakakalo. The problem is that for my experiment to be valid would require video taping, which would inherently make me much more safe. I get along very well with locals, have never had a problem.

What elevation are at in Kula? At 3500' elevation you will likely have 6 - 7 nights that dip into the lower 40's. Even in a well built house the inside temperature will dip into the mid 50's without heat. In a poorly built house, even colder. The good news is that the coldest nights are followed by the sunniest days, thus things warm up into the upper 60's very quickly. With no heat, you will want a warm sleeping bag and good winter cap.

Right to work means that you can't be required to join the union at your job. You can opt out which effectively kills unions. Hawaii is definitely not right to work, you just don't have a union and your employer is taking advantage of you

I've done this drive a number of times. It's not that big a deal under normal circumstances. Becomes a huge mess during the pali shut downs. I don't think the rental car company will mind, the road is ok. Just do it going from Kapalua to Wailuku, and not Wailuku into West Maui. 4WD is not required in any sense of the word.

Aha, we've now reached this most interesting part of internet discussion group psychology. The site has brought a variety of people together that under the patterns of normal life circumstances, patterns that have governed life for thousands of years, would never otherwise meet or discuss issues. City-Data Forum is like one big blind date, or, err, asylum. Divergent opinions get voiced, one side gets offended and lashes back, then the others get offended and attack the first guy or gal. We're like a bunch of chickens in a coop, all of sudden, a big cluck fest unfolds - we write freely write things to a computer screen that likely would not be uttered when face to face

I've always wondered if there's a better way? If it's possible for such forums to behave in a more gentleman like fashion, even when one's point of view is being questioned or attacked? If there's some way to raise the level of dialog to allow for a free flow of views, even ones that clash?

In that light, even though I disagree with much of what JustMoved2Maui writes, I wish to offer my unbridled support and compassion for our fair nurse. She obviously, through great expense and effort, moved to Maui with very high hopes for a better life. Based on what she has written, she must feel like she's stepped from the frying pan into the fire. Both her job and housing have proved terribly unsatisfactory. She spends lots of time caught in traffic and returns to an ungrateful boss. Moving, frying pan, fire - that's a lot of stress. I can understand why she has told us to violate ourselves, it's the stress talking. We've become yet another stress for her, a place where she went for solace and advice. I'm sure my Detroit comments didn't help matters, as benign as they were from my point of view, thus I apologize for my insensitivity.

I'm sure we've all cracked under stress. Let he who be without cracking, cast the first.... ok, I need to work on that metaphor. In that spirit, I offer my deepest prayers to our fair nurse, that things settle down for her, that she find a decent home, that she find a rewarding job with kind bosses - nurses are in high demand state wide - and that she remember that in a certain light, we at this forum are just more patients in need of her love and care. We all have our moments. She just had hers. Perhaps we can avoid kicking someone when they're down. It's more important to be kind than right.

2500'. I heard Nov. and Dec it drops into the 50's. Someone suggested to use room heaters..
That might not work so good in the living room and kitchen as the door frames don't fit at all (been kicked in too many times.. and there's a good 1/2 inch opening to the outside)..asking a contractor friend for a solution to sealing those holes somehow, without having to replace doors.

On the bright side, as it gets colder, looks like termite season is winding down...

The house is a 67 year old plantation house infested with termites. But more importantly it's infested with spiders in all the furnishings and items. Nests of Spiders.

There was a cat sized hole in a bedroom floor. The house stunk of cat spray.

If this isn't enough of a reason not to rent sight unseen, then nothing is. People have been told over and over and over to go through vrbo first for a couple weeks and then rent once on the Island(s) and have seen the place you are signing the lease for. I guess some - or many - don't heed this important advice.
