> I was never involved w/Wailuku. Any comments about that area?

Koale -- As the county seat you'll find real people living and working there. It's not a resort area so it's one of the few places on the island that isn't overrun with tourists. It's nestled on the east side of the West Maui Mountains so it is cooler and wetter than its neighbors Kahului and Kihei.

As an relative newcomer who visits Wailuku only periodically, my impression of the town is that it is authentic, unpretentious, and charming. Compared to the manicured and landscaped resort areas on the beach and even upcountry, the town seems a little depressed and unkempt in contrast. But it's genuine if nothing else.

On the bright side, I think Wailuku might have the most affordable housing on Maui (I'm trying to keep from laughing at using the terms "affordable" and "Maui" in the same sentence).

Those are my impressions. As I mentioned before, I have never lived there and I am a relative newcomer to the island, so take it for what it's worth.

Default Moving to Maui March/April 2010

My wife and I are moving to Maui in March/April 2010, we have looked into shipping containers, approx. 20x8x8 from our home in oregon to our door on Maui was approx. $5100 through Matson. Cars are approx. $1100. Does anyone know the best way to ship a Corvette, low clearance vehicle? Scooters? Jet Skis? I have debated on shipping vs selling certain things, but want to see if it is cost effective. I also don't want my corvette if they damage it. Thanks.

Sell the Corvette. Where would you really drive it anyway? Buy an SUV when you get there. Take the scooters and jet skis as they can go in the container. Sell as much as you can before you move since most of your current furniture probably won't last in the humidity anyway.

I looked into shipping a trailer over from the west coast (LA/SD) to use as a part-time housing unit on a home construction site. That was well over a year ago but the figures I was being quoted caused me to abandon that idea in a hurry. If I'm recalling correctly, the costs were either approaching or exceeding $10K!

They also had some onerous restrictions on the propane storage tanks which most trailers have.
