I don't know where else to post my problem here so I picked this title.
I have Optimum cable with the DVR I pay for also. I have Optimum cable internet also.
I recently purchased my grown up (LOL) HD TV with apps I didn't know I would get and one is YouTube, Newsmax and other apps. I guess I could slum through them for entertainment.
I have two streaming apps I use from the new TV remote Netflix and Amazon. My cable bill is now up to $164.28 monthly.
I would like to cut down that bill but without regular and cable TV channels that I hardly bother with anymore and Netflix and Amazon videos I would go crazy. Especially in the winter.
I live in a multi-dwelling condominium and my municipality as well as the building only have two choices Optimum and Verizon. I use to have Verizon but they are much more expensive than optimum so I switched.
I just don't know if there is any other option and the dish is not permitted here. I have enough problems with wifi here with my damn hp 3755 printer now I'm thinking maybe someone here could suggest something for cutting cable for dummies who know nothing about setting up anything without a company.
I recently found old TV shows I liked on the cable channels so I recorded them so at least now the DVR is coming in handy for something but it's a DVR through you guessed it Optimum.
Am I just one of those people who must stay with the cheaper one Optimum?

Reason: and now far to many old TV shows and movies are freeve with ads :( If I wanted ads I wouldn't have Amazon Prime.
I'm endlessly amused in my own family and neighborhood when they claim they "stuck it to the cable man" and use just streaming services - when the "streaming" itself is supplied through the very same cable, from the very same company. Yup, you sure showed them!
Your family and neighborhood cut costs, by cutting out cable tv.
Yes, they still pay the same cable provider for their internet connection, but they likely cut their monthly bill by 1/2 by cutting out cable tv....like I did.
I could switch from a cable operator's internet access, to a phone company's internet access, & stick it to the cable provider by 100% instead of just by 50%, but I lack the motivation to do so at this time.
Since I started this thread nearly a year ago, 4 million more have cut out cable tv:
I don't remember when I cut the cord, I think about 2 years ago and I love streaming much better than cable TV. I have Comcast for internet and the rest I stream. I can watch more movies, record on Sling Blue (where I get TCM), watch the Roku channel, etc. So many more choices compared to the old cable.
I've been streaming less, because I've become disillusioned with Roku. In my opinion, they're a shady company. They made everyone agree to something or they couldn't use the Roku they purchased. What was everyone forced to agree to? Not to sue Roku in the event of a data breach. What did Roku announce just one month after making everyone agree to that? A data breach. Absolutely shady!
Streaming isn't as inexpensive as it once was. All the streaming services are raising prices, and I've no come to the conclusion that you must include the price of internet into your streaming costs, because you cannot stream without internet. I don't pay for any streaming subscriptions. I just use Roku Channel and Pluto TV, although I may be ending that, because I no longer trust Roku.
I'm watching less television than ever and I've been buying movies and tv shows that I like on DVD and bluray, because it's cheaper in the long run to own what I like than to subscribe to anything.
We cut the cord about 5 years ago. We use a variety of other services including Roku TV and the above mentioned (IPTV).
but you still have to have the cable going into your home for anything to work even and especially the TV.
I broke my Roku by accident so I ended up programming the new HD remote with the Netflix and Amazon streaming which took the place of Roku. I still get the main home screen from Roku until I press who is watching.
Am I wrong in thinking people who cut the cable cord no longer have an actual TV set in their home? or are they and you watching movies and TV shows on your computer. I guess I am trying to ask when people say they cut the cord I assume they mean the actual cable cord that comes into their homes from outside. We still cannot watch anything with the internet access which in my home comes from the cable wires from Optimum.

We definitely use a regular TV - not a computer. Your TV (nowadays) IS a computer, for this purpose.
If you're at my house - watching TV - you cannot tell if it's cable or....cable-cut.
Agree, though, "cut the cord" is a little too literal. Most folks still need the coax for the wifi to stream. Fiber in my neighborhood...but not in your walls. Still coax.

I despise streaming, at least for sporting events, which I watch a lot of. But I DVR them while I'm at work and then fast forward until something happens. For instance Phillies are at bat, I fast forward on 2x till I see there's someone on base, then I rewind to watch the hitter. So I don't have to watch an inning where no one gets on base, which is boring. It's not possible to fast forward and rewind with precision with streaming, because the picture freezes while you rewind and you have to just wildly guess where to stop.
I tried to watch figure skating on Peacock, because now you can't get all the events on cable. I turn it on, and there's a screen "Your program will begin shortly". 15 minutes later, it's still on that screen. So I exit out, watch something else and try again in 10 minutes. This time it has started, but I missed a skater, so I try to rewind to the skater, and go too far and now back on "Your program will begin shortly". So then I try to fast forward, and go too far in that direction. Multiple attempts, and then I just give up in frustration.
20 minutes later I decide to try again. I put it back on, and for 10 minutes, there's just a Zamboni driving around the ice in silence. That's when I give up entirely. On cable, all that crap is edited out. And it was weird watching with no announcers and no score box in the left hand corner. To me streaming sports looks like someone just put a video camera on a chair and turned it on. It's horrible, IMO.
Regular shows I'm sure are not as frustrating, but I will keep cable as long as the powers that be allow.

Does your complex have decent internet speeds available ands do they cap usage ?
If not, I'm thinking YouTube TV or Hulu TV through your internet service.
Hulu + Live TV is $76.99 per month.
YouTube TV is normally $72.99 per month but is temporarily $57.99 for the first three months.
And there are other similar products (less re $ than YT or Hulu ?) .
