I've done my M. Sc in Organic Chemistry and PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry.
I've one year of teaching and two yrs of postdoc experience.
Currently, I'm taking care of our two daughters (5 and 1.5 yrs) and willing to take up a teaching job (High School or College).
I do not know how to go about it and need your help.
Looking forward to hear from somebody,
Shanta

First off, to teach grade school, you need a teaching certificate, not just a degree. It's a separate process, more classes, etc. Check out the UM education program website to see how it's done in TN.

You can teach college with only a degree. With no experience though, you probably wouldn't get a job at any major university, but you never know. You could be an instructor probably. Again, check out the local colleges job sites to see what is available. Unfortunately, it's August and classes start in a couple weeks. The Memphis city school teachers are already back in pre-semester training right now, but maybe you could look into this for the spring.

Another idea is to see what qualifications are needed to substitute each; and then work on your teaching licensure while doing that.

Tennessee did have an alternative certification process whereby a person with a degree in a targeted field (chemistry would definitely be such a field) could teach while earning licensure at the the same time. I'm not sure if that process still exists. I'll look around and see what I can find.

Substitute teaching in the meantime seems like a good idea.

Good info! Looks like you either have to be in a teaching program at the time, or you can only use the license for 3 years max. With a PhD though - why waste time (and sanity) teaching grade school? If I were you, I'd focus on finding a job at a local college.

With our growing biomedical field, there should be lots of opportunities coming available for both chemists and biologists.

You will make more money with Memphis City Schools, but only if you are willing to tolerate hoodlums. Shelby County Schools pays somewhat less, and it you have to put in your time to get a spot a the schools all the teachers want to go to (Germantown, Collierville, Houston). Private schools tend to pay less, but it is teaching in a dream world. I'd go down the list of private high schools and see who is looking for a chemistry teacher.

I don't mean to sound negative, so please don't offense, but the schools here in middle TN (and I assume West TN) would be very apprehensive about hiring a first year teacher w/a PhD. Simply b/c they are not sure how effective you would be and they would have to pay you so much more than a teacher w/a BA/BS. Then again, you are in a field that is need of teachers.

Personally, I would try to get on at a Junior/Community college. Good luck with whatever route you choose.

Not true. The salary schedules are the same for both school systems. Also, Chemistry is one of the fields that is more difficult to fill, so it shouldn't be too difficult finding a job, although I would agree that the city schools would likely have more openings.

Thank you so much for the valuable information.
I am trying to find a job at a local college.
Though I didn't find any vacancy I am just sending my cv to the colleges.
I hope I'll be able to find a suitable position.
Once again, Thank you all...
