Every city has unions, in every organized profession (There's even one for symphony musicians!). But its not like the north where unions are the news constantly. You can look at the city data stats here for the city .

Unions are scoffed at in right-to-work states such as Tennessee (and most other Southern states). Outside of plumbers, electricians, and carpenters, it is difficult to find any group/profession with an effective union in TN.

Urban decay, high murder rate, high unemployment, high rate of highschool drop outs and a shrinking population. I know Memphis has this too, but not like Detroit.

I'm from Michigan and live in Memphis. I'd have to say that the above poster is correct as far as unemployment and shrinking population goes. I really don't know about the dropout rate.

Otherwise I find them very similar...however, in my experience, the "bad areas" of Detroit are pretty deliniated whereas Memphis goes from good area to bad area in the matter of a couple blocks.

Add to that - high cost of living, bad traffic, long sucky winter, state income taxes, brutal police reputation, illegal aliens, plagued by liberal political correctness dysfunctionality, faltering infrastructure, terrible roads (winter doesn't leave it's roads in good condition), crashing industry (automotive), falling house values....

Memphis has problems, but come on, it's paradise compared to Detroit.
