Why does the make up of Germatown HS not accurately reflect the community it serves?

The zip code it is in (38138) is over 90% non-hispanic white and Germantown as a whole is more than 85% white, why is Germantown HS only 37% white?

Do parts of Memphis city fall into the catchment area? I am very curious as to the reason for this disparity?

Germantown High School is not a Germantown school; it is in Germantown, but part of the SCS school system and draws from a wide area. SCS refused to relinquish the name.

Even the other Germantown HS, Houston HS has a disproportionate racial make up.
Odd..

This is the first school year with the municipal districts. I believe they are allowing kids to finish their schooling at the schools where they were under the old, unified Shelby County Schools to minimize disruptions. The old Shelby County Schools was required by the courts to draw diverse districts, and so you had a lot of non white students from Southwind and Cordova coming into Germantown schools. In a few more years, once those students have moved on to bigger and better things, Houston High should be very white.

Maybe the white folks in Germantown adopted a bunch of black kids.

Seriously? Who cares? Figure out something more important to worry about.

Germantown High is just not a very good schooll unless your child is in the IB program.

I graduated from there in 98. It definitely was a lot more than 37% white back then...

The southeast part of the county was just beginning to boom with cheap apartments filled with section 8 voucher folks. So many flooded the area along with the drop in the areas of Cordova that were zoned for GHS the school became very unwelcome for most Germantown folks. The building of Southwind helped some but it came too late. Now that the school is an SCS school instead of Germantown Municipal school it will just get worse.
