We may be re-locating there this summer and wanted to find out which is the best neighborhood to walk to restaurants, is artsy and has character. Kids are in college so schools not important. Would love an older home with a porch, etc... Thank you!

Thanks for the responses. Is there a particular zip code I should be looking at when I look at houses?

Thanks! Can I essentially assume this entire zip is safe? Is there a main street we'd want to live near so we could walk to shops and restaurants?

The entire area is...okay. I think at the top of this forum there's a sticky with a map of neighborhoods and their safety level. You would probably want to live near Madison/Overton Square area or in Cooper-Young. If you put cross streets up here, people will let you know how the area is.

I saw that map - it's really helpful. What do you think of this houses's location? It's just south of Union which does seem to have a lot of retail, but just from a bird's eye view doesnt seem to have the charm we're looking for. Is the Overton Sq area the area around the park? What are the borders of Cooper Young? Is there a street that has less box stores and more walkable with coffee shops, etc?

Eastmoreland Ave, Memphis, TN, 38104 - MLS #3193299 - Rentals real estate - REALTOR.com®

Then there's this house which is gorgeous and cheap...

You would like the Evergreen neighborhood in Midtown a great deal.

Here is their website: Evergreen Historic District Association

It is mainly located west of Overton Park, south of North Parkway, north of Poplar and east of Cleveland. One of the top 5 neighborhoods in the city of Memphis.

As for the two homes listed above, they are both in neighborhoods it sounds as though you would like (Central Gardens and Cooper-Young). Central Gardens is more upscale and safer. Cooper-Young is a little less safe because it is near some run down craphole areas, but it is more eclectic. Both are great neighborhoods.

I second the Evergreen area, it's really nice.

Both of those are in fine places...$1500 isn't cheap for me, but I'm a broke grad student! I agree though...the one on Cooper is really pretty!

One thing I did before I moved here was use the Google Street View AND Mapquest. Mapquest let's you see what restaurants, stores, etc., are near an address.

Central Gardens is very nice (Eastmoreland; I live on the very edge between Central Gardens and Overton Square, and it's great); Cooper Young is a little trendy for me sometimes, but the second one is in a great part of the neighborhood.

Side note: if you live in Cooper-Young, you should eat at Soul Fish everyday. I dreamt about their mac and cheese last night, that's how good it is. Yum.
