Someone who is depressed and can’t get out of bed, would greatly benefit from a combination of antidepressants and a great therapist! Many do not understand depression and make judgements of the person is lazy. Not so.. if severely depressed, the ability to do anything takes twice as long and is a chore. Exercise, exercise, exercise.. commit to daily routine of walking, natural endorphins, tale B vitamins, definitely Vitamin D regiment. Use a light box for about 45 minutes a day upon waking, Called a SAD light box, Seasonal Affective Disorder…

I lived in Portland for 7 years and had to get out. I developed SAD and by the seventh year I was severely depressed. I had a panic attack on the final Summer Solstice I was there, when good ole Rhonda Shelby (love her!) kept telling us we were going to have some sun that day. It came out for 20 mins. A SAD light might have helped, but I moved back to the Southwest, to Arizona (I'm from California.) Depression gone.
As for remedies, I heard that 5-htp and things like that are good for depression. I never tried it so I don't know if it works.
I'm now in a place with gloom. Don't think I'm going to last more than a couple years. That's my only commitment anyway to my current situation. Some of us just prefer sun. It makes me feel alive and energetic. Best of luck OP, I know what you're going through. Is there any chance you can just leave? It was a big undertaking for me to leave, but it was worth it.

Ironically, although the state I live in has legal marijuana, there is also a huge push against benzodiazepine & opioid prescribing because of all the drug addicts here & the chaos they caused. So, my chance of getting a script for Ativan is probably equal to winning the lottery jackpot.
Do you see a psychiatrist? I've had some that were completely against me using Ativan (Lorazepam) but my current psychiatrist is fine with me using it.

Otherwise the ups and downs of life are normal and we need to learn to go with it all.
My dysthymia has morphed into a severe depressive episode which the Lexapro is not helping. My psychiatrist has now prescribed Pristiq but after reading all the side effects I am afraid to take it. I guess I've lived with depression so long that it seems more palatable that trying a new med.
* EFT (see Brad Yates, YouTube) - you can do EFT on any issue and you will feel relief
* 4/7/8 breathing - Inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8 (very effective for sleep)
* edibles (if legal in your state)
* Homeopathy - find a good therapist online - amazing results are possible
* Vitamins: B, C, D, Zinc, etc. - research those good for depression
* Make a list of fun stuff and start doing stuff on the list
* Dogs. Dogs are anti-depressants
* Massage
* Healthy, organic diet
* Hydrate - drink lots of filtered water
* Exercise - walk every day, if you can
* Volunteer - do good for others, no matter how small (smile at people, help people)
Honestly...Ive been having days so horrendous where all I think about is suicide (like today).
Question for those of you who struggle depression: is it cyclical for you? Like does it happen for days or weeks at a time, then go away for a while?
