M-E-R-I-D-A!!!
Scramble those letters and see what else you get! *think dirty*
Yes, I don't even need the drug lords. The routine traffic stop and extortion is enough for me to say eff' it.
If you are going on a caribbean vacation, ie, Cancun, Play Del Camren, Tuum, Akumal etc..I doubt you would rent a car. Most people wouldn't. Would only make sense if you were traveling around to different cities and staying at those cities. It would be like going to NYC and renting a car. Been six times and never rented a car.
At the same price range as Mexico would be Bahams, Jamaica and DR. All with a much higher crime rate than the Yucatan in Mexico.

I've rented a car in the Yucatan and never had a problem though... Especially not from Cancun to Tulum, but I've driven across the entire peninsula. A lot of people will rent cars just to see some of the farther out ruins like Coba or cenotes. In general since the Yucatan is mostly pancake flat, driving isn't that bad--it's like Florida in a way.
Renting a car makes sense for many people, especially so if traveling with a family or 3-4 other adults. Even if traveling just in the Yucatan.
Yes, there's a lot of further out ruins or small villages in the Yucatan that would've been tough to visit with just buses... It's nice to have the freedom of a car--and as far as the Yucatan goes I didn't find it that difficult to get around. Though in the rest of Mexico I've been on extended trips and relied solely on buses or colectivos.
I can't think of a single thing Mexico has to offer that I can't find in Florida, and I can drink the tap water without fear in Florida. I can think of even less that Mexico has to offer worth risking my health and safety for.
There are 270,000,000 privately owned firearms in the United States, but only 15,953 Americans died from gun violence in 2011. Why the outcry for gun control in America? If you avoid sketch areas, gangland and the drug trade, you really have nothing to worry about.
Really, you can't think of a single thing? How about a vast array of local cultures, customs and languages that do not exist in Florida? How about thousands of years of history? How about mountains, volcanoes, canyons, deserts? This is but a small sample.
I would imagine that the general population in Mexico, which does not own guns, has a much lower rate of gun violence than the general US public. You are trying to compare everyday citizens to drug cartels, which makes no sense and is dishonest at best. The US also has about 9x more total rapes, but do women worry about travelling through the US normally?
The more you write, the more I think that you're just kind of xenophobic.
I love going to Florida, and I like different things about its different parts. The only thing I don't like is its wildlife, both on land and sea, but such encounters are rare anyway. Anybody would have to be a total idiot to go swim in some obscure pond or lake in central Florida, for example.
I grew up 140 miles north of the Mexican border and it wasn't until within the last 5 or so years that I went to TJ for the first time. I know you can't judge Mexico by a border town, but it felt real seedy. The ONLY good thing I can say about TJ is that it has a cool evening breeze coming in off the Pacific. Mexico is so far down on my bucket list and, with all the news, it's even further down.
I judge the US by Detroit, and then I pat myself on the back for not bothering to educate myself.
Because this forum seems to attract its share of people who just like crapping on Mexico and/or Latin America for whatever reason. Guess it makes them feel good about themselves and where they live and travel. They have no real interest in Mexico and yet tell you how terrible it is. It doesn't come from any real experience, all just from what the media or some "friend" tells them.
Pretty much. The illegal immigration forum is filled with enough racism, bigotry and ignorance to make any sane person ill.
