Her being Mormon has no bearing on her guilt or innocence.
However, I think it's unlikely that she's guilty. Statistically speaking, women her age with 7 kids who are devoutly religious are unlikely to be drug users/smugglers. She doesn't fit the profile. Just because the drugs were under her seat doesn't mean they're hers; they could have been placed there hours or even days beforehand.
I agree that being religious has no bearing on whether or not she (or the husband) was complicit in this crime.
There are a lot of Mormons who place great value on having money.
Look at the money they made/make from casinos in Vegas, even while gambling is against the religion.
People sometimes find it convenient to hide behind the facade of religion. Some of the biggest sinners work in our most lofty and supposedly honorable institutions.
Then, people with children often want/need extra cash.
Most Mexicans and especially us foreigners trust the military. It is one organization that has not been corrupted. We were told a few weeks ago when we had some soldiers around Lake Chapala that we could not give them anything like soft drinks, food, etc. We wanted to show that we appreciate them but their commanding officers want to make sure they stay un-corrupted.
It was soldiers who found the drugs under her seat. Soldiers are usually honest. I don't know of anyone who ever said they paid a soldier a bribe.
The soldiers could have been used to hurt this woman. Someone else could have been smuggling the drugs. This woman could be guilty. We don't know. There hasn't been a real investigation.
I doubt they can prove she put the drugs under her seat which would be noticeable to someone on the bus. It is hard to hide a 12 lb package. A bus employee could hide the package when the bus was empty which looks more plausible.
If no one can say the drugs were her drugs and she put them under the seat, I am sure they will let her go without her bribing anyone.
A police officer is paid about $600 U.S. dollars a month. That isn't much for risking his life so he supplements his salary and lunch money occasionally with a "little bite." You can pay $5 dollars and get out of a ticket. Something like this, a drug bust, it is more difficult to pay a bribe because too many people are involved. Very low wages cause corruption.
As implied before, it is possible that someone put the drugs under the seat for another person, on the bus, or the driver, to give to someone else across the border.
Do they have assigned bus seats in Mexico?
Someone on that bus was probably going to wait until either everyone left or that seat was vacant so that they could retrieve the drugs. Maybe it was this lady or her husband, who knows at this point?
ETN has assigned seats but I'm not sure about the one they were on. If I remember correctly Autobusesamericanos doe NOT. Could be because ETN is a very nice bus line while Autobusesamericanos is not so nice.
How does the fact that drugs were attached to the underside of a bus seat prove anything about the person who happened to sit in that seat? There's no evidence to connect her to the drugs.
All Mexicans are corrupt and all Mormons are good people. What about Mexican Mormons? Are they half good?
There is no proof that this woman did not try to smuggle drugs. Someone tipped off law enforcement that drugs were on the bus and obviously the tipster was involving the woman. Either she ticked someone off who was getting even with her or she was smuggling drugs.
Mexico has no reason to want to arrest foreigners for drugs. American tourist spend billions of dollars a year in Mexico and falsely arresting Americans is not favorable for Mexico.
True -- anyone can be tempted into the big easy money. Many drug traffickers figure if others want to use drug -- not their problem, there is quick money to be made. Often the traffickers use their innocent appearance knowing they're less likely to be suspected.
The mormon lady claims she never saw any drugs & the mexican thugs wanted 5k. The thugs thought she was a easy mark but they were so wrong. Mexico is a corrupt & dirty country.
It's only the other side of the same corrupt & dirty coin that the USA is part of. Once those drugs make it over the border into the USA, the drug traffickers are pretty much home free.
In fact it's known fact that the Indian reservations are a big target of the drug traffickers -- and the traffickers are destroying those people -- so much greed.
Kind of silly to just blame Mexico when our government knows full well that tons of drugs are coming over the border and just like with the Indian reservations, next to nothing is being done to stop them.

I agree. Maybe she just got on the bus before the 'contact' did and he could not sit there.
There is no proof at all that she is guilty, that's why they let her go.
But that does not refute that it could have been her.
I don't know how 'normal' it is to get on the bus with no baggage, but if I were the contact and did not wish to be caught that's how I would do it because there would be no way to pin it on me.
Then again, I might not even be in that seat and I might plan to be the last off the bus - OR I might be the bus driver.

Jeeze. The CIA and military were caught bringing illegal drugs into the US. THEY are part of the problem. Why, when we know they did and are probably still doing it, do we exempt a woman just because she has kids and is a member of a religion? To me, that would be a great cover. Haven't Russian spies in the US done the same thing?

There were eye-witnesses and a video recording of this woman and her husband as they boarded the bus and from what I've read in published reports, those witnesses and that video recording ... backed the woman's statement that she did not put the drugs there. Was/is she part of some sort of grander conspiracy? Who knows. You might want to speculate that the drugs were put there by the Roman Catholic Pope, who might be engaged in drug trafficking in order to raise funds to pay court settlements due to pedophile priests. That, I'll suggest ... would be as wild a theory as the one linking the woman now freed to the drugs.
