I agree, Teotihuacan is a must see. Now you can go at night to the light show.

im really a bad person to ask because im not here as a tourist.
im trying to live here permanently.
so i don't do touristy things.
i try to survive by working and being careful with money.
Mexico City is very expensive when compared to other parts of Mexico.

If you have American Dollars..
you'll be living large.
50 American Dollars converts to 1000 Pesos.
You can find really cheap street food that taste wonderful.
the fruit here is amazing. it's so much fresher. there are fruits i've never seen before but taste amazing.

if you can't speak Spanish like me..
invest a cheap Tablet.. you can get one for less than 50 US Dollars here then install Google Translate.
works great for me.
(this is how i communicate with the girl im kind of seeing.)

The US dollar will get you more pesos but having been the grocery trade fo 23 yrs i know how they operate. I shop at Calimex o Commercial Mexicana seeing how they operate markup wise etc.
As the exchange rate goes shelf prices also climb. It is all a mater of numbers.
My first time in MC a friends mother thought Americans like myself was/were rich untill I explained the costs of US living like Rent etc...you get the picture.
Watching some guys shelf stocking at the mkt, they were busting tail compared to some other workers around here.
Some work hard while some are just there it seems.
Recall one guy saying....Steves got the money...let him pay......sure I had the mney as I EARNED IT.

Im headed to Mexico City in May, staying in Roma Norte.

I have one week and original plan was to spend 5 days in Df then the rest in Guanajuato.. thanks to all e suggestions.. think I will stay put in el DF for the entire week and do side trips to Taxco and Cuernavaca.

I guess Ill have to come back another time to do Guanajuato/ San Miguel/ Guadalajara.

Will i be missing out on a lot by just staying in the city?

By the way, the state department lists by state, their recommendations. Some have no travel warnings, orhers (e.g., Sinaloa), quite a few.

Good three choices.
While at Taxco and Cuernavaca check out the underground caverans there.
Entrance is a large cave opening oing underground that was believed to have been a river going towards Acapulco and dumping into the ocean.
Worth sering with thestagalites etc like Carlsbad caverans.
Lived in Mexico City with a Mexican wife and we had a weekend home in Cuernavaca.

Gracias Esteban! I won't have a rental car so will take the bus from Sur and just cab or uber (if it works) once there. Do both cities have caves?

Has been Has been a while for me.
MC had a tour bus going to the cave entrance and then to Taxco.
Church is worth seeing while tour guide (student) will hustle you over to a store for you to buy some silver.(don't)....trust me.
The cave is between Cuernavaca and Taxco...only one.
I would rent a car in MC....take the toll road to Cuernavaca...then to the cave...then to Taxco...then to Acapulco for the beach and the night.
Do not stsy at any of thr beach tourist hotels unless your super rich.
Driving along the beach strip keep driving a couple of miles north or west up to cheaper hotels where the local tourist visiters stay ...very clean and affordable..You can leave your car at the hotel...walk across the street and take the local small. transportation buss down to the strip.
Walk inside any hotel for a close beach view...I have done that.
Buenas Suerte on your visit.
My spelling is attrocious on this cellphone.
