Lol... They are both correct. It literally translates to "long live the race". However, the definition or meaning changes to "the people".

BTW, to the OP, viva el pueblo also translates to town but the meaning changes to "the people".
Think of it as this: I don't know if you are a Christian or not but in the bible Jesus says he can buld the temple in 3 days. While others ridiculed him thinking it was imposible to build the walls of a temple in 3 days, Jesus was refering to the people.

I'll say my opinion regarding La raza.
In chilangolandia, we use La banda more than La raza, which means the gang, the troop, the friends, the people, etc.
In northern Mexico La raza is more used.
In chilango you'd say, vamonos de fiesta toda la banda (let's go party all together)
In regio you'd say, vamonos de fiesta toda la raza (let's go party all together)
That's the real meaning of it, in chicanolandia it could have a different connotation though.

I wonder if this query could have anything to do with US Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, who was a member of a group with La Raza in its title..?? I know that a lot of her dissenters, in looking for reasons not to confirm her, hit upon this org she was a member of -- and questioned the possible nationalistic meaning of this word..
