I'm considering living there for the summer and I heard that in general South Miami is safe, but that there are bad pockets. Is this a safe neighborhood or in/near any bad pockets??

Well... not totally. That's a transition area from upper middle class to higher crime. Go on google and take the street view on sw 64 st from 57-62 avenues. A friend lives in the area and so far has not had troubles. The bad areas are easy to find due to odd colored homes and curbing along the streets.

I am with tallrick on this one, there are some pretty sketchy parts in the area right outside of the University. You wouldn't expect it with the nice houses of coral gables right there either. The address you gave, i believe, is in one of the more sketchy parts of the area. I don't think you'll be in grave danger.. but just know that you're not going to be in the nice/really safe part of south miami.

No racism intended, but a rule of thumb is if you are in an all black area, it probably isn't the best area to be in.

I hate to say this, but this is actually pretty accurate. I know this is an over generalization, not all blacks live in these areas obviously or are poor, but the worst/highest crime areas in the city usually tend to me mostly black. It's kind of sad, but there's not much you can do. I don't really know much about that area but from Street View it does look a bit sketchy. Not saying that you'll get shot while you're there or anything, but usually if you see any areas with blue/green houses, huge overgrown front yards, and lots of pedestrians on a residential street, you're in a bad neighborhood.

Blue/green houses... until now, I felt so lonely thinking I was the only one who noticed that. Why do they choose those aqua colors?

You're not alone, plenty of us notice that too. I have no idea why they do that. Maybe blue paint is cheaper?

I guess I'm meant to be in a bad area because these are the types of houses I gravitate to. LOL!

Miami is strange, and for a racially diverse city, people tend to live with their own "kind" oddly enough. There are "mini ghettos" in Miami. That is an okay area. And good access to the Metro rail.
