I don't understand why Miami and Miami Beach are just one city - Miami?! Just a bridge connects them, but they should still be same city. Miami's population is very low for a very famous and known city, so combining Miami Beach with it makes the population larger.

Then there is Bradenton and Bradenton Beach? I guess it's a turf war of the elders.

What does it make a difference? Miami is a very very young city so it was created in a different time. Small suburbs and cities around were the norm and now are the norm. Miami is a VERY small city land wise. It is not only Miami that is famous but Miami+Miami Beach+Coral Gables is what is really famous. It is the metro area. It is just the way it is and it is the way it is going to be. Besides it would not raise Miami population that much. Miami Beach has a population of about 89,000. Hialeah is the second largest city in the county with a population of over 200,000!

This happens alot in Florida. Sometimes it's because the Beach is actually a beach community and the other named town is more inland, often on the other side of the Intercoastal Waterway. Really no different than St. Louis and East St Louis.

Miami-Dade County is made up of many different Villages and Cities. The people that live in these different villages and cities of the county at one point wanted to control their tax dollars, and so have created their own Villages and Cities within the county. Take Palmetto Bay once they incorporated a few years ago the streets got landscaping, they are building a Cultural Center, the mall looks much nicer, etc. all because they control their revenue now not the county. Hence why Miami Beach is not part of the City of Miami.

You have the city of Miami which only has like 400,000 people and is just a small portion of the Miami metro are,Miami Dade county has 2.5 million,Broward 1.8 million and Palm Beach county 1.3 million, all of these together are what many people consider Miami,at least Miami Dade county could be considered Miami which includes Miami Beach which only has about 87,000 people so there are still over 2 million others in Miami Dade county,Miami and Miami Beach are basically just 1/5 of Miami Dade county or 1/10 of what could be called Miami metro. You can't really go by the actual city, compare it to Jacksonville which being a larger city in size has 800,000 plus in population, double that if Miami's with a total metro area population of only 1.6 million compared to the 5.5 in South Florida.

I'd be wrong to say that I live in Miami, right?

I do say that I live in Kendall, FL, not Miami... am I going too far with it? I mean, I do say to people online that "I do not live in Miami".
