Do not even bother moving here. You won't make it.

Thats how much I had when I moved around 2004...and it didnt end well. I had a car as well. Miami is terrible for trying to start a new life...because millions of other immigrants are trying to do the exact same thing.

Unless you are lucky or have friends and family in the area, it wont work out.

Rat, please listen to the people who answered regardless if they sound abrasive or not. They do know the area (more than me but it sounds spot on). Maybe in a couple years you can visit for a few weeks and look around. However, please listen to them. CD'ers know their stuff.

May want to try Cleveland for now as I believe you know that area better than SFL. 34? You still have a few years

Best of luck whatever you choose. Maybe Miami for vaca????

I am of a different opinion that everyone else. If you are gettin high off of the simple fact of living in Miami, sure, it is doable. There are rooms for rent in Little Havana and along the Biscayne corridor in your price range. Rooming houses too in the same areas. Although, I don't know that I would call them safe, but they certainly aren't like Liberty City or Overtown. But they are genuine urban neighborhoods. Although, your perspective might be different, walking around, without a car. SOBE also has suprisingy "cheap" studios...

Yes, Miami and Miami Beach are possible without a car. But you would need to have a wonderful personality to work in a restaurant or bar to make great tips...most likely, Spanish would be important...and even after you find a minimum wage job on or near public transport, there is no guarantee you will get 40 hours a week.

Honestly what I would do in your place is to buy a good used car, come here and rent a room on a month to month basis and look for a job that pays alightly above minimum wage. I know that isn't what you want to here, but it seems more plausible, considering you ruled out the idea of a roommate.

So yes, you could move to Miami, but I don't see it working out very well, unless you adjust expectations. If you want to live somewhere warm with beautiful woman...there are other areas in the state that are less expensive. Why not look into Orlando? Or Dallas or Houston? Cheaper, more jobs, lots of warm weather...

The ONLY way you should move to Miami is if you come for a visit first and land a secure job that will support you long-term. Anything else is a very bad idea.

If you really wanted to move here, you could move to Hialeah or Little Havana, which are somewhat safe neighborhoods. Hialeah actually has a pretty nice area in-between Okeechobee Road, Palm Avenue, Flamingo Way, and East 5th Street. Although how come you would not want a roomate? Miami is doable with your budget, although it will be a tight fit. Also I would suggest finding a job as soon as possible

But there are boobies right? LOL.

I have listened to everyone here thusfar, and I must say it does look as though Miami will have to remain a vacation destination only. My dream would have been to get a job at one of those food/drink shops on South Beach and look at boobies all day. That obviously will have too wait I guess. Anyway, although I'd be SUPER happy doing it, that job probably wouldn't come anywhere near paying my rent!!!
BTW - Cleveland is still a front runner as every other place I've posted is a bit to costly. At least there's a beach. It's no South Beach... but it's got what I need. Just in a lot lower frequency. LOL.

i totally understand not wanting a roomate - I also refuse to live with a stranger. the only people i would even CONSIDER sharing close personal living space with, would be a bf or spouse, or my best friend who i've known for many years.

chelito and smokey, your replies do not address the OP's questions -- they asked about a specific scenario. Responding to them that they could move here "if' they did this or that, isn't useful, and doesn't answer what they asked .... the point is that the situation they are looking for - as they described it - is not workable here.

and this: "suggest finding a job as soon as possible" -- is just a useless sentence altogether.
well no DUH - of COURSE finding a job 'asap' is the ideal. The whole point of all the replies that the rest of us posted, is that that is just NOT LIKELY TO HAPPEN IN REALITY. and not at anything near the op's current wages.

And Ratking, good luck finding a good place to live and move forward in your life!!
