Hey Everyone.

I was hoping you all could share your honest advice with me. I am a 24 yr old single female moving to Miami for the first time ever. Im from a pretty peacefull place and never experienced or witnessed any sort of crime. I am moving to Miami to go to FIU university park campus and because I love the latin culture and hot weather and have always been curious about Miami. After I finish my masters at FIU I hope to stay and work there.

I am so lost as to where to rent an apartment b/c I have no idea where is safe for a single girl and where isnt. After finding my ideal apartment, I was told that I should stay away from there (downtown on the bay). It sucks because the police dept and realtors and such are not allowed to talk about dangers so I am looking to the help of locals now. Please if you can offer me detailed info.

I dont mind driving 30 min to get to FIU. I preferred something on the water like in Brickell but I think it is waytoo expensive there. I dont mind paying up to $1200 if some or all utilities are included. Prefer a highrise with a balcony. I dont care about clubbing, my main priority now is safety from crime and hurricanes. I dont want to have my gaurd up 24/7 and worry about being attacked walking from my car to my home or things like that (though I am a pretty cautious person).
I know there are looots of bad areas like opa-locka and liberty city etc but where is it relatively safe? Lets put it this way, If you have a daughter moving to Miami where would you like her to live?

I appreciate any advice you can give me about anything. Also any recommendations on good cheap furniture stores or used car dealerships that you like? Thank youuuu!

This exact question has been asked multiple times. It really depends on your situation. I would try using the search function to look to at those previous responses, many which are excellent. People have recommended everywhere from South Miami/Coral Gables (for someone your age) to all the way up the turnpike extension into Broward County (for families, or those looking for less of a culture shock). The search feature is definitely your best option here .

I'm going to be honest; if your number one priority is safety for 1200 a month within a half an hour, you are going to live in a pretty boring area, probably somewhere in SW Broward County, taking the Turnpike extension south, a fairly easy ride. Coral Gables is a nice area as well thats fairly safe, and much closer to FIU and certainly much cooler.

well if you're afraid of hurricanes i would suggest not to move to brickell etc, because as far as I remember all those coastal areas are evacuation zone A. and i don't know if i'd wanna go back and forth between fiu and those areas every day. it's not that far, but traffic is just baaaaaad. but if you definitely would like to live in a highrise then you wouldn't have a real option tho i guess. close to fiu and very safe is doral. tons of condos/apartments around there. but it's quite boring to be honest. dolphin mall and miami international mall are around the corner but other than hat... and it just looks so fake with all those gated communities etc. to the beach it's about 20 minutes (depending of traffic of course). stefan

* 10 rapes (44.9 per 100,000)
* 29 robberies (130.3 per 100,000)

Well, its safe by Miami standards...

Judging by here description of what she wants, I think this is much more to her liking Crime in Pembroke Pines by Year

Plus the Latin culture is plenty alive, as well as various other cultures including Asians, African Americans, West Indians (and East Indians for that matter as well), Jews, and regular white folk, all coexisting and getting along. Truthfully, the same can not be said about Miami.

Samantha6,
There are plenty of fairly safe and decent places to live near the FIU campus. There's no need to commute thirty minutes. Traffic here is hateful enough. As with most large cities there are always going to be scary areas, the area around FIU isn't that worrisome. There many places available in the Westchester area, close by there, but I might suggest East Kendall area, East of 107th Ave as a possibility.
(I'm sure other posters here will also have suggestions, as well).

Go to Apartmentguide.com and Forrent.com and check out apartments/ condos in the area of FIU around SW 107th Ave and or SW 24th Street, you'll find many.
Go to the Blogs and Websites for FIU and look at the boards that post apartments there, you'll see many. Take advantage of the FIU community forums, as well as, the school counselors and the housing lists available through FIU. They should steer you in the right direction.

Good Luck!

gosh after reading around on this forum, doesnt look like anyone wants to live in Miami and only live there because they have to. Do you guys just think I SHOULD NOT MOVE THERE? I have many other universities to choose from but I chose Miami b/c I really thought it was a "tropical paradise". I knew it had alot of crime but not like this!! I really dont mind loud music and crazy drivers and spanish language everywhere. I actually want to learn spanish and know a bit already. However I certainly dont want to live in fear that I might get shot or raped if I leave my apartment. And I dont want to dress poorly so people dont mug and rob me and I want to be able to go shopping or to the beach alone sometimes...uughh this is difficult

If I was here I'd go to Miami. Especially since she's attending college and will meet tons of people just like her.
