Default Neighborhoods:

-West Kendall: OK neighborhood, relatively safe, but far from Downtown. If you gonna rent, it costs about $900 to rent a Studio or a 1br/1ba condo/apartment.

- East Kendall / Dadeland: good neighborhoods, relatively safe and not far from Downtown. About $1,050 to rent a Studio or a 1br/1ba.

- South Miami ( East of US-1 ): good neighborhood, relatively safe and closer to Downtown than East Kendall. About $1,050 for a Studio or a 1br.

- Coconut Grove ( East of SW 32nd Ave ): good neighborhood, relatively safe, and very close to Downtown.

- Downtown / Brickell: good neighborhoods and safe ( especially Brickell ). I don't know the rent, but is not cheap.

- Miami Beach: good neighborhood and safe ( especially the area around 41st Street ), not cheap ( and not expensive ).

All these neighborhoods are nice and generally safe.

Since you're young, I'd stick to the areas of Brickell, Downtown (cheaper than Brickell but still very urban), and South Beach. Maybe even Coconut Grove, but it's pretty quiet there (relatively speaking). Coral Gables, Kendall, South Miami, and Midtown are all suburban (Midtown being the most urban) and are honestly very boring, especially for someone that's 18. Best of luck!
