Just a question out of curiosity, have any of you ever seen a confederate flag in Miami?

I did many times, but always with the slogan, u know, as a sticker. Never as a waving flag.
"bring back the good ole dixie" something like that

A few years ago it was quite common to see cars driving with the flag in the Redlands. I haven't seen that in the longest time. On the West coast of Florida the flag is pretty common.

Well, the USA fought the Brits, Mexicans, Spanish, Central Powers in WWI, and Italy, Japan, and Germany in WWII. Of those countries only the WWII German National Socialist flag would be improper to fly now because of the regime it represented. The Confederate States seceded as Americans. Slavey was part of the issue but slavery was legal in the USA and even implied in the Constitution. I think it can be abused as anything can be abused but does not represent a specific common front of anti-black attitude. People abuse being Christians, Republicans, Democrats, Socialists, etc.

I see a person displaying a Confederate and I would think they are somehow linked via an ancester who fought in the Confederacy. It is when they speak or gesture that another reason is possible.

I see a person cloaked as a KKK member and I know that person is intolerant of certain races, cultures, and religion.

Regarding the use of the Confederate flag on public property or events..only if the flag is there as a historic representation of the era in which the flag was in use. Museum, reenactment, etc. But not in commission chambers, etc.

I wouldn't expect to see many confederate flags in Miami. Maybe like the outskirts near the Everglades, but definitely not near the city.

I think flags and symbols have different meanings. I mean, for someone the American flag can indicate freedom for others it can represent oppression and imperialism. You take what you think is best based on your expectation and experience in life.

The same happen with the Confederate flag, for some southerners the flag stands for Anglo-Saxon, White, Protestant, KKK, etc supremacy BS, for others it represents state rights and the right to defend oneself from any kind of entity or persona that want to violate inalienable rights. You take it. Nonetheless, with the increasing Federal and State power over the people; too many Czar, Patriot Act, too much federal power, I, as many others, could identify with the Rebel Flag based on the latter explanation. Not to mention that the Dixie flag has been used as symbol of rebellion in a few of world conflict involving abuse of Government power. However I do not contradict that given the fact that many extremist groups use it as a vehicle for implying superiority over other cultures and people, a special look has to be given from time to time to prevent a social disaster. By the way, I have never seen a Confederate Flag in Miami-Dade County, but in the two times that I have been in Davie, Broward I have seen two pick-ups with the Dixie flag on their rear windshield.

I think it depends how that particular flag/symbol affected someone. For instance for a person of Germanic decent living in Nazi Germany the Nazi flag could be German pride, the over coming of a debilitating economic depression and a return to German power and supremacy on the world stage. For others like Gypsies, Mental Ill, Jews and host of other groups it represents racism and horror. It can be all those things at one time depending on what side of the fence you're on. Much like the confederate flag can mean something great for a southern white but the black experience under that flag is something completely different. Should it be banned or not allowed? I don't know what the answer is to that one. one thing is for sure, alienating sections of the population doesn't bode well in terms of cohesion in a society and that is a important element in any SOCIETY (I think many American's don't understand what it is to be a part of a society sometimes.)

I hope I'm not informing you about something you shouldn't know...
The Civil War did not have anything to do with slavery and blacks.....
It was just a smoke curtain and a poor excuse to destroy and plunder an important part of that beautiful country...
Later, they did the same thing to Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Philippines, Hawaii....
The Confederate Battle Flag? A beatiful flag, I have a couple of them.

*sigh* If you think that slavery played no part in the civil war then you need to read more. Go read up on the Missouri compromise, read up on the admission of California as a state into the U.S. and what the controversy was over it. There are MANY other examples but I will just leave it at that. You fail to realize the south was based on cotton and tobacco in terms of its economics, to abolish slavery meant a end to its economy as it stood at that time.

You can't rely on fox news and the internet to understand american history you have to go out and read actual books not or take classes, relying on some kids blog which he writes from his moms basement wont help you in this issue. I had to take a few classes on American history because of my degree. I understand the factors involved very well. Don't get me wrong, it sounds very romantic and cute to think the south was just standing up against the usurpation of its rights blah blah blah but reality is a entirely different thing.
