We're thinking of moving to Coral Gables next year. We have a 4 year-old who will start the 1st grade during the 2009-2010 school year. Are there good public schools in Coral Gables area? And is it relatively easy to get placed?

Coral Gables Elementary school is a great school.
The teachers are great, the atmosphere is friendly, fun and family oriented. Carver Elementary is one of the premier schools in Florida,
they have wonderful programs for their students and genuinely care about their progress in elementary and beyond.
Placement is not difficult in either school if you live in the school district.
If my child were starting first grade in 2009 (instead of graduating high school, as he will be next year),
I would have no problem whatsoever with him attending Gables Elementary or Carver. They are fine schools.

(Of course there are great private schools there as well, such as St. Thersa School, St. Phillip's Episcopal and Gulliver Academy School.)

Good Luck!

We recently moved to Coral Gables. The public schools here participate in the school choice program which means that you can go and register your child at any of the 3 participating schools (Sunset, coral Gables, and Carver elem.) and rank which school you rather have them attend. It is best to do it sooner rather than later because I wanted my son to attend Coral Gables because it was closer but he ended up getting stuck with carver because it was the only school that had space. I did research on all the schools. They are all great. Sunset, in my opinion, is the best choice but both Sunset and Coral Gables are A and Blue Ribbon Schools. Carver is a great magnet school and has an italian and Spanish Program (Sunset has German, Spanish, and ___?).
